1856 PR 65. Well defined with attractive russet and steel-blue toning. The total number minted is not known, however, Breen estimated in 1977 that somewhere between 30 and 40 proofs were extant in all grades, but we feel the total to be a bit higher. This popular Type Two issue is very rare in grades of PR 65 and better, with no more than 15-20 gems known. We expect this jewel to elicit very competitive bidding. From the Litrenta Collection. 1856 3CS PR65 NGC. The Mint did not begin mass producing proof coinage for direct sale to the public until 1858. The proof 1856 three cent silver mintage was unrecorded, and examples are scarce in all grades. This Gem representative displays reflective fields and sharp central detail, with only minor softness on the border stars. Blue-green, gold, and lilac toning is original. Census: 5 in 65, 3 finer (1/22).

1856 3CS PR64 NGC. Slightly bent. The frosty devices complement the reflective fields. Most design features show bold definition. Warmly and attractively toned in vivid hues of blue, violet, and gold. Scarce and desirable as indeed are all U.S. proof issues minted prior to 1858. Probably no more than a few dozen proof 1856 trimes could be accounted for. (PCGS# 3703)

1856 3CS PR64 PCGS. We do not know how many proof three cent silvers were produced in 1856, but Breen (1977) does speculate that 30-40 pieces are extant. Since several of the survivors are impaired to one degree or another, the present near-Gem is undoubtedly one of the finer representatives available to today's specialists. This is a richly toned sea-green and golden-brown example with hints of underlying reflectivity. The major devices are well struck, while letters and stars near the border show occasional softness. Population: 8 in 64, 3 finer (9/06).

1856 3CS PR 64 PCGS. While the exact number of proof three cent silver pieces struck in 1856 is unknown, Breen estimated in 1977 that somewhere between 30 and 40 pieces are extant today in all grades. We feel the number is somewhat higher, but this is a very rare coin in the proof format. Only 9 pieces have been certified by the major services (4/01) in PR 64, with 10 Gems graded. This darkly toned piece has deeply reflective mirrors in the fields and each side is covered with mottled cobalt-blue and rose colored toning. (PCGS# 3703)
