1806/5 25C MS64 PCGS. B-1, R.2. One of the best coins from this die pairing to survive and a gorgeous example at that. Note the pleasing dark gold through the stars and peripheral lettering, while the centers are brighter silver-gray. Golden luster sweeps through the fields, and we note a hint of blue along the upper edge of the obverse. Perfectly matched on the reverse where the darker gold and blue tones reside along the periphery, with lighter gold to gray at the centers. Boldly struck by the dies on Liberty's curls and the eagle, although we note expected weakness on a few of the obverse stars which lack their central lines. The quality of the strike on Liberty's curls and the eagle's chest is worthy of a few moments of study by any numismatist who appreciates Federal coinage, as very few dies were capable of producing such well struck, lustrous devices, and even fewer coins from this period survive which retain this stunning quality. The surfaces are clean save for a few faint hairlines and a handful of ticks, and this coin is far and away finer than virtually any other Draped Bust quarter. There is a long, thin line in the right obverse field, which crosses over star twelve and nearly touches star eleven, this was likely caused by a thin wire or thread that adhered to the obverse die (or planchet) during striking, much like a lintmark seen on later proof issues. Both dies exhibit extensive but light clash marks in the fields, and present a wonderful opportunity to study a very early American coin in a superlative state of preservation. Note the overdate feature, with the strong 5 abundantly clear beneath and through the ball of the 6. One of the finer examples known of this date, and housed in an older green insert PCGS holder. 1806/5 25C MS63 PCGS. B-1, R.2. Deeply toned surfaces on both sides of this splendid Select Mint State example. This is a nicely centered impression with full border details, save for some notable softness on the obverse peripheral stars. Both sides have dark gunmetal toning with slightly lighter pinkish color at the centers. Although not fully struck, all of the design elements are quite well detailed. The overdate feature is bold and easily visible, even without magnification, a noteworthy feature on this coin. Prominent die clash marks are visible on both the obverse and reverse. Few examples of this variety meet or exceed this specimen for quality. Population: 4 in 63, 4 finer (7/06). (PCGS# 5315)

1806/5 25C MS63 PCGS. B-1, R.2. Dusky dove-gray, sea-green, and russet-brown colors embrace this impressive Draped Bust Quarter. Well struck for the type, which is difficult to find sharp, mostly due to Liberty's high relief shoulder. Only the top right reverse star exhibits significant softness. A tiny tick beneath the eye is mentioned for pedigree purposes, since no other blemishes are readily found. An obvious overdate, the lower half of the 5 is clear within the loop of the 6. The mint must have had problems with their letter punches in the first decade of the 19th century, since the I, T, and 1 punches each have a defective foot. Light clash marks (as made) are visible near Liberty's ear. Population: 3 in 63, 4 finer (10/05).

1806/5 MS 62 NGC. B-1, R.4. Irregularly struck with some softness over the highpoints on each side, but uncommonly well defined on the breast feathers of the eagle. A long diagonal grease stain (as struck) runs from northeast to southwest across the center of the reverse. Cinnamon-brown and cobalt-blue toning accent both sides of this solid mint state coin. 1806/5 25C MS62 NGC. B-1. R.2. Peripherally toned with vibrant splashes of blue and gold while the centers are a much lighter gold to silver in color. Fairly well struck on all but the uppermost hair curls of Liberty, and we note strong breast feathers on the eagle. Both the obverse and reverse dies show strong and multiple clash marks, particularly so on the reverse which shows much of the outline of Liberty in the fields. Always in strong demand for the overdate feature, and a scarce coin to find so well preserved. The overdate feature is strong, with the lower know and loop of the 5 very clear to the unaided eye, apparently no effort was made to efface the undertype. Early quarters have faced increasing demand the past few years and new and better reference works are currently and becoming available, so we anticipate coins like this will continue to see increased demand by numismatists who demand top quality coins for their collections.

Expected die clashing is most easily recognized on the reverse. The overdate feature is strong, with the lower know and loop of the 5 very clear to the unaided eye, apparently no effort was made to efface the undertype. 1806/5 25C MS62 PCGS. B-1, R.2. Sea-green, lavender, and navy-blue colors appear when this deeply and originally toned example is rotated under a light. The curves and ball of the underdigit 5 are obvious. The only overdated variety of the year. The major devices are well struck, although the left side obverse stars are flat. The surfaces are refreshingly undisturbed, with a couple of faint handling marks on the vertical shield stripes as the only detriment. Struck from strongly clashed dies. Less than twenty pieces of this variety have been certified as Mint State by the two major services, and several of these could well be resubmissions. Population: 4 in 62, 7 finer (4/03). The underdigit is especially strong on this piece, and this variety is easily attributed by the right foot of the I and left foot of the T that are missing from LIBERTY. A bit irregularly struck with some areas of softness and certain portions of the designs very sharply impressed. Quite bright overall, the centers are much lighter in hue with deep blue and sea-green toning around the margins. Population: 6 in 55, 10 finer (7/03). (PCGS# 5315)
