1821 MS 67 PCGS. B-4, R.3. This extraordinary coin is nearly perfect with a bold strike and highly reflective, prooflike fields. The surfaces are pristine, and even under magnification reveal only insignificant contact. Natural, light, streaky golden color is seen over each side, deepening just a bit around the rims. Rivaled in condition only by the 1825 MS 67 last sold by RARCOA in 1997, and the Eliasberg:1818 coin. This exceptional piece represents the very essence of rare numismatic material. 1821 25C MS67 NGC. B-4, R.2. A later die state of the variety with a crack from the border through E of UNITED into the field near the scroll. Both sides have noticeable clash marks, especially around the eagle on the reverse. The mintage reported for the year was 216,851 coins, although some of those were from dies dated 1820. It would be almost impossible to speculate how many of each date were included in the total production figure. Mintage of the Capped Bust quarter dollars was sporadic at best. The following years are represented: 1815, 1818-1825, 1827, and 1828. Breen suggested that the public much preferred the Spanish 2 Reals silver pieces and other fractional units. The Spanish colonial pieces were much more familiar to most people of the young nation.

Designs were by John Reich, who redesigned all of the circulating coinage after he was hired in 1807. The quarters and half dimes were the last two denominations to adopt the new designs, in 1815 and 1829 respectively. Three obverse and five reverse dies were produced for a combination of six different die varieties. NGC has certified a total of 142 quarters dated 1821, in a variety of grades. Some of those were attributed, and others were not. The best B-4 variety grades just MS61, although the non-attributed examples included coins in a variety of grades. There is still only this one MS67 example.

This is a remarkable Superb Gem, reminiscent of coins from old-time collections, such as Eliasberg, Norweb, Garrett, and others. Both sides are sharply struck with all details exquisitely defined, save for just a few star centers. The surfaces are fully lustrous with a satiny texture. Pastel toning with rose-gold, blue, crimson, lilac, and olive-green coloration. An exceptional Superb Gem for the connoisseur. (PCGS# 5331)

1821 25C B-6, R.7. VF20 NGC. Usual Die State. Star 7 points to turban similar to B-1; I below space between AT. Although the surfaces are lightly hairlined, this is a natural light to medium gray example that still qualified for certification by NGC. The Browning-6 variety was discovered in January 1991 by Aram Haroutunian, who, believe it or not, discovered the second specimen just a few days after he found the first. Both of those coins are lower grade than this example from the Reiver Collection. The reverse has a tiny rim nick over ED of UNITED.

A remarkably rare coin, the most recent (July 2003) John Reich Quarter Census shows a total of 4 examples of this variety known, with the census reading 30, 25 (the present coin--now NGC VF20), 8 and 3. For the specialist, this is one of the highlights of the early Capped Bust quarters, and will certainly realize a very strong price. History will be rewritten based on the results of this sale, and the lucky buyer of this lot will have many competitors who will long wish they could have bid enough to capture this extremely rare coin. It is interesting to note that Jules purchased the present coin from early silver variety specialist and dealer Jim Koenings, who frequently searches entire bourse floors for such rare varieties. We suspect that this one one of Jules's pride and joys, and it was purchased soon after the discovery of this new variety. While there are probably a few more examples awaiting discovery, this die pairing will likely remain extremely rare for the foreseeable future.

1821 25C MS66 PCGS. B-4, R.3. Luminous honey toning overlays the remarkably undisturbed cream-gray surfaces. An outstanding representative of the type. The luster full and unimpeded by contact, and the strike is nearly as impressive, since the major devices are sharp save for the eagle's claws, and only a couple of upper stars lack crisp centrils. Worthy of the finest quality type set or specialized die variety collection. Perfect dies; two fine lines (as made) connect a leaf to the reverse rim.

1821 25C MS66 NGC. B-4, R.3. A remarkably attractive, original piece, with dusky gray-gold toning that extends over the surfaces. The strike is uniformly sharp, with frosted highlights in direct contrast to the semi-prooflike surfaces. Contact marks are at a minimum, with most difficult to detect even under magnification. A couple of light abrasions to the right of the eagle's head will serve to identify this coin for pedigree purposes. Although somewhat available in Mint State grades, the 1821 quarter is quite difficult to find once it reaches the Premium Gem state of preservation. Only two pieces of the date have received higher grades from NGC and PCGS combined (8/06). (PCGS# 5331)

1821 25C MS64 PCGS. B-4, R.3. Star 7 points to the center of Liberty's headband. The last S in STATES is centered over the S in PLURIBUS, and the lowest olive leaf connects via a tine of metal to the rim. This example is exceedingly well struck, showing the full detail inside the clasp binding the drapery, and all stars show central detail save for stars 5 and 6. The lovely patination is sunset-orange and gold in the centers, ceding to steel-blue at the rims. Despite the moderately deep toning, much luster is evident, and the piece overall seems conservatively graded and high-end. Population: 13 in 64, 11 finer (6/06). (PCGS# 5331)

1821 25C MS64 NGC. B-4, R.3. Electric-blue, apricot, and battleship-gray toning drapes this satiny near-Gem. Well struck except for the claws and a few of the upper stars. Thorough evaluation with a loupe locates only a small number of wispy slide marks on the obverse field. B-1 and B-3 are the most available varieties for the year, and a high grade example of the Browning-4 marriage is of obvious interest to the advanced specialist.

NGC has certified only two examples as B-2, noteworthy since the service has been attributing varieties for the past four years or so. The deep gunmetal-gray piece also has ice-blue and rose shades.
