1836 25C B-5, R.7. XF45 NGC. Usual Die State. Star 7 points to junction of curls, star 13 close; No tongue, stem over right side of C. This is the Finest Known of this extremely rare variety. In the July 2003 John Reich Journal there were only 6 examples known in collectors hands, with the present example reported as the only "VF" noted, the other coins listed as VG or Fine. There is a minor dull nick in the field above Liberty's chest which continues onto the base of her neck and perhaps Jules downgraded the present example for the survey. The coin itself is fairly sharp, although there are some weak areas caused by die cracks. There is a heavy obverse die crack from the rim through the upper two points of the first star which extends into Liberty's neck where it meets a bisecting crack which reaches to the rim just right of the 6, and continues up Liberty's neck, face, through the B of LIBERTY where it fades away in her cap. On the reverse, there is the usual die crack through D STATE to the rims above.

Both the obverse die and reverse die were used with other varieties, and this die pairing was a relatively recent discovery of the past decade or so. For the quarter variety specialist, this is one of the rarest and most desirable coins in the entire Reiver collection, and an opportunity which may not be repeated for many years to come. Jules considered the present coin to grade VF30, but this shows how much grading standards have changed over the years. Whatever the coin is graded doesn't matter, for it remains the Finest seen of this extremely rare variety and will be one of the most contested quarters in this entire collection.

1836 25C MS64 PCGS. B-2, R.2. Lushly toned in apricot, electric-blue, and olive colors, this flashy near-Gem has exceptional eye appeal when viewed with the naked eye. In its appearance in the Isaac Edmunds auction, the lot was described, in part, as "At first glance, this has the appearance of a nice cameo Proof. Indeed, Proof examples were struck from this die pair." Well struck aside from the centers of stars 4 and 7. Four lengthy, slender die cracks journey across the obverse, one of which bisects the portrait. A few wispy marks are detected in the fields, only visible upon close inspection under a loupe, and a small aqua spot is noted just beneath the neck. Population: 5 in 64, 1 finer (10/05).

1836 25C MS64 PCGS. B-3, R.1. Die State IV. Star 7 points to the center of the lower curl. On the reverse the branch stem is centered above the right side of the C in the denomination. The period is far from the C. The eagle has a tongue. A late die state, with multiple cracks on each side. Light silver-gold toning is seen on each side. The luster is excellent, although the peripheral strike is soft, and a small planchet flake is noted under the eagle's beak. (PCGS# 5355)

1836 MS 64 NGC. B-3d, R.1. Sharply struck, except on the stars on the right side of the obverse. The surfaces are highly lustrous with a bright frostiness that overpowers the significant overlay of gray toning with dark charcoal patina that outlines the devices. An extraordinarily attractive coin that exhibits several die cracks, especially on the reverse.

1836 25C MS63 PCGS. B-3, R.1. A die crack from 5 o'clock to 11 o'clock bisects the obverse, and that crack is joined by others that wander through the date, the cap, the left side stars, and the bust truncation. The reverse has cracks from 6 to 10 o'clock, with another below the right (facing) wing. Golden-brown and apple-green colors enrich this lovingly preserved Quarter, although a few wispy slide marks are encountered in the central left obverse field. Population: 6 in 63, 5 finer (10/03). 1836 25C B-3, R.1. MS62 NGC. Die State VI. Star 7 points to center of lower curl; No tongue, stem over right side of C. This well struck coin boasts great eye appeal and frosty luster in the fields. Bright silver with medium gold around the periphery. No surface problems to speak of and a loupe will scarcely note more than trivial handling ticks. Struck from a pair of shattered dies, with extensive bisecting and radial cracks on the obverse, and three complex cracks which meet at the center of the reverse plus some fainter cracks are present. This is Reiver state d. An exciting coin to study and enjoy for the extensive network of die cracks.
