1918 25C MS68 Full Head PCGS. Over the past several years we have been fortunate to be able to offer several of the nicest full head 1918 Standing Liberty Quarters yet certified. Glancing at the mintage of this third year issue, over 14 million pieces, one would tend to underestimate the scarcity of Gems with a full head designation. While we find Cline's estimate that only five percent of Mint State survivors are sharp enough to meet this criteria to be a bit on the low side, it is nevertheless surprisingly difficult, especially following the striking excellence of the 1917.

This truly extraordinary specimen brings all the attributes of a Superb Gem together into one highly lustrous, instantly appealing package. The strike is extremely bold right down to the rivets of the shield and both sides boast splendid pastel toning that lightens to a window of brilliance in the centers. Only a few trivial, nearly microscopic blemishes penetrate the mint frost of the otherwise pristine surfaces. 1918 25C MS67 Full Head PCGS. Extraordinary quality for this date and Mint. Note the blazing luster which exudes from fields and the copious mint frost which draws the eye. Next study the rainbow toning along the lower obverse rim, and bathe in the intensity of the iridescence. The reverse too, has some toning but it is more generic gold with flecks of blue near the rims, pretty to be sure, but not as sensational as the toning found on the obverse. Fully struck by the dies, with even the shield bosses complete, an area which is frequently softly defined even on coins which earn the Full Head designation. Housed in an older green insert PCGS holder, and a delightful coin that any collector would be proud to own. Population: 8 in 67, 1 finer (10/05). (PCGS# 5721)

1918 25C MS67 Full Head NGC. Apricot-gold shades visit the borders of this fully lustrous and nearly unblemished Superb Gem. The strike is exceptionally sharp on Liberty's waist and shield, since every rivet is crisp. The head is also full, and only the date is typically brought up. The 1918 has a generous mintage of more than 14 million pieces, but many survivors cannot be identified, since the date was not recessed until 1925. Uncirculated pieces are nonetheless available, although the specialist is usually frustrated in the search for quality, since Full Head pieces with full luster and clean surfaces remain elusive. 1918 25C MS67 Full Head PCGS. This is one of the most beautiful Standing Liberty Quarters of any date that this cataloger has had the privilege of describing. We hesitate to say that the technical quality embodied in the Full Head designation is of secondary desirability to the awe-inspiring eye appeal of the original toning, but such a statement is not far from the truth. Rainbow colored patina encircles the obverse periphery in a mottled fashion with speckles of mostly tan-russet iridescence scattered over the reverse. The luster is full on both sides, as is the strike. More of a strike rarity than the 1917 Type Two and 1919, only 5% of the 14.2 million Quarters that the Philadelphia Mint delivered in 1918 display Full Head definition (per Jay Cline). NGC and PCGS combined report only 11 coins at the MS67 Full Head level, and there are none finer (10/02).

1918 25C MS 67 Full Head PCGS. Pure-white with shimmering mint frost and a bold strike. The few minor marks are very small and do not detract from the exceptional appearance of this jewel. While common in lower grades, this issue is much scarcer in MS 65 Full Head and better than the mintage of 14,240,000 might indicate. Only nine pieces have been certified MS 67 Full Head by NGC and PCGS, with none finer (6/99). (PCGS# 5721)

1918 25C MS 67 Full Head PCGS. This is a lovely Superb Gem example that displays razor sharp definition throughout. The rich endowment of frosty luster radiates through the holder unhindered by either patination or surface disruptions. A high mintage (14,240,000 pieces) P-mint delivery, the 1918 is readily obtainable through the Gem grade level but rare with this combination of striking quality and surface preservation. NGC and PCGS combined report only 9 examples in MS 67 Full Head with none finer (9/99).
