1847 $1 MS65 NGC. This is one of the "common dates" among Seated Liberty Silver Dollars in the 1840s, and yet this Gem MS65 example is still tied for the finest certified by either NGC or PCGS. The mintage of 140,750 coins was the eighth highest mintage of any date in the No Motto series, and the fourth highest of the decade. As such, it seems likely that examples would be easily obtainable in any desired grade, but this is truly not the case. This example is highly lustrous and sharply struck with fully brilliant satiny surfaces and excellent eye appeal. Several raised diagonal die lines are visible in the reverse field, attesting to the fullness of strike. This is one of six examples certified as MS65 by both NGC and PCGS, combined, and is an offering that will be viewed with excitement by current day Seated Liberty Dollar specialists. Population: 2 in 65, 0 finer (10/05).

1847 $1 MS65 NGC. The 1847 (140,750 pieces produced) is the most plentiful Seated Dollar in Mint State from the 1840s. Most Uncirculated coins, however, grade no finer than MS63, and the present representative is one of just four Gems known to NGC and PCGS (1/02). The fields are striated (as produced) with shimmering reflectivity that is evident at virtually all angles. A light overlay of golden iridescence is seen on both sides with slightly deeper olive-gray hues in a few of the more protected areas around the obverse rim. There is little to complain about regarding the strike, all major features exhibiting an exactness of definition that is not often seen on coins of the type. Accuracy does, however, compel us to mention some slight bluntness of detail on stars 8-13 and at the top of the eagle's left (facing) wing. An attractive coin in all regards, and an accurately graded Gem. (PCGS# 6934)

1847 $1 MS64 PCGS. One of the finer examples we have recently seen of this date, the 1847 is relatively available in lower grades, but quite rare in the premium grades of Mint State. It is often seen heavily bagmarked which is the reason so many more pieces are known in lower BU grades. This piece has only a few trivial surface abrasions on each side that separate it from MS65. The few marks that are present are not enhanced by the coin's generally brilliant, untoned appearance. A noticeable grease mark is seen through the ES of STATES. Well struck throughout including complete head detail on Liberty and the eagle's plumage. Population: 6 in 64, 4 finer (6/05). (PCGS# 6934)

1847 $1 MS64 PCGS. This near-Gem has charming, satiny luster. The surfaces are mellowed to pearl-gray for the most part, with overtones of champagne and powder-blue on each side. NGC 1847 MS 64. One of the finest examples known of this date, the 1847 is relatively available in lower grades, but quite rare in the premium grades of mint state. The few marks that are present are quite well concealed by the deep blue, gray, and golden toning that blankets each side. 1847 $1 MS63 NGC. The 1847 issue is one of the more available ones from this decade, perhaps due to the United States' war with Mexico that year. Despite the high mintage, uncirculated examples are not always easy to come by. This example has a slate-grey and rose-gray patina and underlying semi-reflective luster. Some tiny milling marks are the most notable distractions, including a series above the eagle's neck on the reverse. Population: 17 in 63, 10 finer (6/05).
