1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS67 NGC. Ex: Swiss America/Dr. Merritt. Fully struck with scintillating cartwheel luster in the fields and exquisitely beautiful red-orange and mint-green toning presented over both sides. As expected, the surfaces of this stunning Superb Gem are virtually pristine.

Although the U.S. commemorative series was little more than a decade old by 1905, history was already repeating itself. The 1893 Chicago World's Fair was originally set to open in 1892, a more logical date since it commemorated the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. From a numismatic perspective, the solution was to strike Columbian half dollars for both dates, 1892 and 1893, thus creating an additional coin for the collector to acquire, and additional revenue for the Exposition organizers. The Portland, Oregon Lewis and Clark Exposition was originally scheduled to open in 1904, but did not do so until June, 1905, partly due to competition from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. Once again, the numismatic solution was to strike Lewis and Clark gold dollars with both dates. The 1904 and 1905 issues have similar net mintages, per the Guide Book, but it is clear that the 1905 is the scarcer of the two dates in better Mint State grades. The temptation is to conclude that collectors who purchased the 1904 passed on the 1905, but in fact, neither date was made available until 1905. More likely, the Philadelphia Mint produced and delivered the 1904 gold dollars with better quality, relative to the 1905 issue. Currently, the Lewis and Clark is the only two-headed U.S. type, although that is likely to change with the upcoming Presidential/First Lady commemorative series. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (4/06). 1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 NGC. Many numismatists accept the assertion of Q. David Bowers that Charles Barber copied the portraits for the Lewis and Clark dollars from a pair of paintings by Charles Wilson Peale. The transition from two dimensions to three did not turn out well, and in his Numismatic Art in America, Cornelius Vermeule savaged the design. Nonetheless, collectors have come to view the 1904 and 1905 issues as treasures.

Radiant with a pleasing semi-prooflike finish, this gorgeous survivor displays lemon-gold color that brightens as the surfaces dip into the light. There is not a single distracting abrasion to report, and the strike is sharp for the type. The only pedigree marker of note is a small mint-made mark in the lower right reverse field, below the final A in AMERICA. Interestingly, a loupe also reveals numerous tiny planchet voids (also as struck), though these are neither unsightly nor grade-limiting. An important opportunity to acquire one of the finest known examples of this popular early commemorative. (PCGS# 7448)

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. Paul Gilkes, in an April 4, 1996 Coin World article, wrote that the design of the Lewis and Clark Exposition gold dollar, with the date 1904 or 1905, is one of the most unusual on U.S. commemorative coins, being the only U.S. coin issue to bear single portraits of two different individuals on the obverse and reverse of the same coin. Captain Meriwether Lewis' portrait appears on the obverse, while the reverse shows Captain William Clark. This Premium Gem specimen displays dazzling luster and rich yellow-gold patination. A well executed strike emboldens the design elements, and both sides have been well cared for. Population: 57 in 66, 2 finer (2/07). (PCGS# 7448)

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 NGC. The large-scale meltings and rapid price depreciation of the Louisiana Purchase gold dollars made collectors wary of the new Lewis and Clark commemoratives, and after the relative failure of the issues of 1904 and 1905, it would be another decade before any commemorative coinage, gold or silver, would be struck in the United States. This example from 1905, generally considered to be the scarcer of the two dates, has highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces, though without the prooflike surfaces often seen on higher-grade pieces. The portraits have suitable detail, and hardly any marks are visible to the unaided eye. With only two finer examples certified by NGC, it is hard to come across a better example for a high-grade set of commemorative gold (11/06).

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS 66 PCGS. This issue is considerably scarcer than its 1904 counterpart in all grades despite comparable mintages. The colorful surfaces show radiant orange-gold coloration that yields to green hues at select angles. Both sides are equally free of abrasions and the frosty luster rolls gently around the sharply struck devices. Although PCGS reports 2 examples in MS 67 (12/99), we would be surprised if any 1905 Lewis and Clark commem could surpass this coin in terms of eye appeal. (PCGS# 7448)

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. This is a coin that should make any commemorative gold collector sit up and take notice. Not only is this the key 1905 issue of the Lewis and Clark, but it is offered here in nearly unsurpassable condition. The surfaces are almost perfect (as one would expect from the grade), but what grabs the attention of the viewer first is the thick mint frost and pale-amber coloration that covers each side. One tiny mark is seen at certain light angles on the obverse near Lewis' nose, this being the only pedigree identifier that is visible. Population: 53 in 66, 3 finer (3/04). (PCGS# 7448)

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. The 1905 Lewis and Clark is widely recognized as the key to the gold commemorative series, and it is significantly scarcer than its 1904 counterpart. Only on rare occasions do we have the opportunity to offer for sale an MS66 example of this important coin. Only 53 pieces have been so graded by PCGS with a mere three finer (3/04). This particular coin has exceptionally attractive mint luster. The colorations it exhibits are also noteworthy, particularly the subtle lilac and orange-gold patina on the reverse that deepens significantly on the lower portion of that side.
