1860 $1 PR66 Cameo NGC. While 1,330 proof dollars were actually produced this year, the majority of those were melted at year's end as unsold, leaving a net mintage of only 527 pieces. Breen speculates that the extra 330 pieces that were struck on March 8 (above the 1,000 dollars needed for sets) was from extra demand that was anticipated from souvenir hunters who did not wish to buy sets. Even with this low net mintage, proof 1860 dollars can be found in major auctions without too much difficulty. However, what sets this coin apart from those usually available is the stunning eye appeal on both obverse and reverse. The fields are bright and sparkle with deeply mirrored proof reflectivity, while the devices are heavily frosted and set up a strong cameo contrast against the "blackness" of the fields. Very lightly toned, each side is essentially perfect from a technical standpoint. Close examination reveals several tiny lint marks that were struck into the fields, lint having adhered to the dies after they were wiped with a soft cloth, and then were transferred to the struck coin. The most obvious lint mark (and the most useful for pedigree purposes) is on the reverse just above and to the left the eagle's upper left (facing) wing. (PCGS# 87003)

This upper-end PR66 is brilliant throughout and the fields are very deeply mirrored on each side. The devices show thick mint frost that provides strong contrast against the "blackness" in the glassy fields. An outstanding cameo Seated Dollar. Population: 1 in 66, 3 finer (4/03).

1860 $1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Unlike the current craze for U.S. proof sets, in the late 1850s and early 1860s demand for proof sets was low. Often, the Mint struck many pieces that were melted when they went unsold. The 1860 proof Seated dollar was no exception. That year, the Mint produced 1,000 proof sets, plus another 330 proof Seated dollars. Even though the official mintage was 1,330 pieces for the 1860 Seated dollar, a large number went unsold and were melted at the end of year, leaving a net emission of only 527 coins. Some believe that another 330 proofs were struck for collectors who chose not to buy a complete 1860 proof set. If that is true, the net mintage would rise to 857 pieces. However, even that number appears deceptively high, as PCGS and NGC have combined to grade only 307 1860 proof Seated dollars. Moreover, Gem specimens are extremely elusive. The two grading services have graded a total of 26 Gem proofs (only seven pieces designated as Cameo), and only 28 higher (14 Cameo pieces). This piece offers frosty silver-gray central devices complementing brilliantly mirrored fields, tinged with iridescent pinkish-gray and cobalt-blue patina. Were it not for a few light hairlines and scattered contact marks, this piece might qualify for an even finer grade. As it is, this elusive Gem piece offers much eye appeal. PCGS has certified four coins in 65 Cameo, with five Cameo examples finer (4/07). (PCGS# 87003)

1860 $1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Vivid sea-green, rose, and navy-blue colors appear when this lovely near-Gem is rotated under a light. Beautifully preserved, and exceptionally struck aside from a hint of softness on Liberty's hair. Although the Guide Book reports a mintage of 1,330 pieces, the certified populations suggest a much smaller number were actually issued. Bowers states in his 1993 Encyclopedia that just 527 pieces were distributed and the other 803 coins were melted as unsold by the mint. Population: 7 in 64 Cameo, 10 finer (10/03). (PCGS# 87003)
