Two-Piece Lot of 1936 50C Albany Half Dollars With Rare Presentation Boxes, MS66 PCGS. Each coin is beautifully preserved and lustrous with warm russet-gold and champagne toning over unabraded surfaces and sharp design elements. The coins are accompanied by their original National Commercial Bank and Trust Company boxes, which are very rare in their own right, and all the more so still intact with their original coins. When ANR sold this boxed pair in 2005, the coins were raw, but they have since been certified, each as MS66 PCGS, and stand alongside their boxes. The condition of the boxes is the same as when they were described two decades ago; the white box has some superficial tears on the cover that efface small portions of the blue ink bank stamp, while the red is lightly worn but in better condition with its bank stamp intact. Both boxes remain structurally intact.

The boxed pair is accompanied by a photograph of the two boxes with a handwritten letter by Anthony Swiatek, which reads:

"John: You are looking at the only Albany coin - White Box with ink logo to ever surface. The red is the second Albany box to enter the marketplace. I own the 1st, as seen in my paperback book. There has been rumor of a 3rd for the last seven years. Both boxes - enlarged - are from The Helen Carmody Collection."

More recently, Swiatek referenced this boxed pair in his Encyclopedia (2012):

"Rarer are the cardboard boxes that housed a single coin. These were distributed by and imprinted with 'The National Commercial Bank and Trust Company of Albany' in a red box with a red velour interior and a slit pouch for the coin. The bank's coat of arms is imprinted gold ink on the top cover, as well as a white box with a blue velour interior (in blue ink). Today, it is this special type of holder that determines the worth of a coin-holder offering. The above boxes housing and MS-64 and an MS-65 coin brought $4,370 as a pair in the

1937 50C Arkansas PDS Set, Uncertified. This is an original, intact PDS set of the 1937 Arkansas Centennial half dollars, including the 1937, 1937-D, and 1937-S coins. The three coins remain raw, encased in the original velvet-lined presentation case in which they were originally distributed by Stack's in 1937. Each piece is originally and delightfully toned with varying amber, russet, and golden hues over an ivory underlay of satiny luster, with no obtrusive abrasions. The toning is as naturally acquired from contact with the slots of the velvet case. Includes the original blue Stack's certificate that accompanied the coins, and the original cardboard mailing box, postal stamped 1937 and shipped to Providence, Rhode Island. A delightful piece, preserved in its original encasement as it is, and one of this cataloger's favorite pieces in the collection offered here.

1937 50C Three-Piece Arkansas Half Dollar, PDS Set, MS63 to MS64 NGC. This set includes the 1937 MS63, silver-gray overall with dots of deep cerulean and elements of olive-gold on the reverse; 1937-D MS64, similar coloration on the reverse with whispers of tan-gold at the obverse margins; and 1937-S MS63 dappled green-gold and silver-gray with extensive plum toning at the right obverse. This set comes with the original case of issue and the original mailing box, postmarked April 28, 1937, as issued by Stack's on April 28th, 1937.

1937 50C Arkansas Half Dollar PDS Set, Uncertified. This original three-coin set, including one piece from each mint, displays uniform satiny luster bathed with a delicate champagne warmth with bold strike sharpness and no overt abrasions. The coins are accompanied by their original black distribution case, as issued by Stack's in New York City. Stack's packaging was somewhat fancy compared to the envelopes used to distribute most of the Arkansas halves. Also present are Stack's blue advertising insert, as well as the original outer mailing box. Swiatek writes that the blue insert "all too often does not accompany the case when offered for sale today: most were thrown away." This intact set, complete with original Stack's packaging, is quite a rare item.

1939 50C Three-Piece Arkansas Half Dollar PDS Set, MS64 PCGS. All three coins are certified MS64 by PCGS with consecutive certification numbers. Each piece displays a similar appearance composed of ivory luster beneath freckled russet toning. No overt abrasions are seen. Includes the original woodgrain cardboard presentation box as issued by Stack's. There are no inscriptions on the box, but Swiatek writes: "When the existing supply of the black cases ran out, and before all of the 1938 sets were distributed, a different 4 x 5-inch holder was substituted. The outer case and the inner top was made from a fine looking, light tan, imitation wood-grained paper. Velour (either black or green) covered the inside of the bottom section, which had slots for the three coins, arranged in a triangle. This holder was also used to distribute the 1939 issue by Stack's, at $10 per set." (Total: 3 coins)

1936-S 50C Bay Bridge Half Dollar, the 79th Piece Struck, Uncertified. The coin is satiny and light golden with russet accents. Housed in a custom Capital Plastics screw-type holder with signed letterhead from the San Francisco Mint Superintendent and Treasury Department denoting this as the 79th example of the commemorative struck at the San Francisco Mint, on November 4, 1936. The holder is inscribed: Official Presentation Piece - November 4,1936 / (Among the first 100 Struck, total mintage 71,424).

1935/34 50C Boone Half Dollar, MS66 PCGS. Beautiful satin luster with ivory-white color and devoid of major toning adorns this well-struck piece, providing ample eye appeal. The Boone half dollars were distributed by C. Frank Dunn, and various distribution holder types were used. One of these was the wedge pocket holder made by Lindly Box Company, per Swiatek (Encyclopedia of the Commemorative Coins of the United States). This coin is accompanied by its original wedge pocket holder, as well as the original mailing envelope with a red merchandise postal label.

1936 50C Cleveland Half Dollar MS64 ANACS. A delightful piece with satiny luster and original russet toning in measured amounts on each side. No major abrasions are evident. This is the 70th example struck, as denoted on the ANACS small-sized holder insert. Includes the original cardboard presentation card with sliding view window. The back of the card identifies this as the 70th piece struck " at the Philadelphia Mint and was received from the Philadelphia Mint in a separate envelope so marked." The back of the holder is also signed by the Cleveland Centennial Commemorative Coin Association Treasure Thomas Melish, and a public notary.

1892 50C Columbian Half Dollar, Uncertified. A well-struck piece with satiny surfaces that feature deep gunmetal-gray and blue-lavender toning, as is expected for an 1892 Columbian half dollar still housed in its original distribution holder and envelope. This is the Wells Fargo "keepsake" holder, indicating the coin was awarded to a Wells Fargo employee. The envelope is hand-inscribed with the recipient's name and station at Wells Fargo. While no official distribution holders were made for the Columbian halves, various banks that distributed them made their own, and all are scarce or rare.

1893 50C Columbian Half Dollar With Original Case, AU58 PCGS. Many Columbian half dollars were not well cared for by their original recipients, thus coins like the present can show slight wear even though it never circulated and remains with its original presentation case. The burgundy leatherette case is in excellent condition and is inscribed on the lid: COMPLIMENTS / OF THE / McCONWAY & TORLEY CO. / PITTSBURGH, PA. The coin is lightly iridescent beneath deep gunmetal-gray and gold-russet patina.

1935 50C Two-Piece Connecticut Half Dollar Lot With Presentation Boxes, One Coin Uncertified, One Coin MS64 PCGS. The MS64 PCGS coin is sharp and lightly toned with ivory luster that has deep russet in the protected portions of the fields. This piece was offered raw in the 2005 Jewell auction by ANR, where it was accompanied by two of the silver foil hinge boxes that were among the original distribution methods used by the banks that sold these coins. Those silver foil boxes remain with the coin.

The current lot also includes a second Connecticut half dollar, which is raw and toned a light champagne hue. It includes its original red presentation box with red velour interior. The lid of the box has a bronze-colored border stripe but no other printing.

Lot of Two 1936 50C Delaware Half Dollars, MS66 PCGS. The coins are individually holdered with consecutive certification numbers. Both are champagne-brilliant with well-struck design elements. Tab toning appears on one side of each coin. These coins were originally purchased together, and they are accompanied by the original distribution holder and Delaware Swedish Tercentenary Commission mailing envelope. The envelope and holder are in excellent condition. The Jewell Collection cataloger noted that the original owner "carefully preserved everything."

1936 50C Elgin With L.W. Hoffecker Ephemera, MS65 PCGS. Thoroughly lustrous and frosty surfaces complement boldly struck design elements bathed in deep russet and amber-golden toning. Many original ephemera items accompany the coin. These include its original distribution envelope with Hoffecker's name and address stamped on the front, a secondary inner manila envelope (torn open on the end), and the original mailing envelope with red merchandise label. Also present is a July 13th, 1936-dated letter describing enclosed circular and order blanks for the Elgin coin. Presumably, one of the order blanks was returned, but one -- on pink paper -- remains present. A September 19th, 1936 distributor note from Hoffecker acknowledges receipt of an order for one coin, a full-page advertising letter is also present.

1936 50C Gettysburg MS67 NGC. Glistening original luster engulfs this Superb Gem, complementing its sharp strike and pristine preservation. Daubs of amber-red and golden-russet toning in the margins complement iridescent ivory color overall. Housed in a Generation 5 fatty holder.

The coin is accompanied by its original distribution envelop and three-slot cardboard holder. The envelope is postal marked June 1937. Also with the envelope and holder is the original letter that accompanied the coin, on Pennsylvania State Commission letterhead, stating the contents of the envelope as one coin. (PCGS# 9305)
