1822 1C VF Details NCS. Fine 12 EAC. N-14, High R.7. Wes Rasmussen has owned this cent on three different occasions, selling it to Robbie Brown prior to his sale in 1996. In 1992, John Wright stated: "No example of this variety has sold at auction [at that time] to establish a free-market price, but the two private transactions were well into four figures (G) and five figures (F). Value is speculative, but I know several collectors who would pay dearly for one in any grade. The pressure should ease as more turn up." In the next dozen years, just two more have turned up, and those coins were also low grade (both Good). What is so surprising is that this variety is instantly recognized with just one glance at the reverse. The point of the leaf under OF is directly below the extreme left serif of the F. No other 1822 variety has the leaf this far to the left. This is the plate coin for the variety in both the Noyes and Wright references. This is also the discovery coin for the variety, being first identified by Dick Punchard shortly after he purchased the coin in 1984. When Wes bought the coin in 1983, he attributed it as N-12 which was verified by John Wright, and Wes sold the coin to Punchard as N-12. In over 20 years, this Fine coin remains the finest known. The second was discovered by Jim Long in 1986 and sold to Dan Holmes later that year, and the third was cherrypicked by Don Weathers at the 1990 Early American Coppers convention. This is not the first time a major large cent variety has been cherrypicked at the EAC conventions over the years. A fourth example, grading just Good, was discovered just prior to the 1996 sale of the Robinson Brown collection. The fifth example actually appeared on Ebay in March 2002.

We completely disagree with the findings of NCS regarding this coin. The surfaces are deep steel brown with some lighter brown highlights in the fields and on the devices. If this has been cleaned and retoned, I suspect a large number of collectors and d (PCGS# 1624)

1822 1C N-13, R.5. AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. This is the finest known example of the variety, and an attractive one at that. It is the Wright plate coin for the variety, and also the Noyes plate coin. It is lightly cracked on the obverse from the upper border through star 7 and on to BE of LIBERTY. This die variety was discovered by Willard C. Blaisdell in 1947, and remains elusive today. According to John Wright, this example, which remains finest known, was the third example of the variety to be located. Today, perhaps 50 or so examples survive, although most are in low grades. In fact, after this single XF example, the Condition Census drops off sharply, with the sixth best grading just Fine 15.

1822 1C MS65 Brown PCGS. N-6, R.3. A strong inner circle borders the left obverse rim from 12:30 to 7 o'clock. CENT is crooked with EN leaning left. Luminous golden-brown patina intermixes with olive and hints of blue. Some bluntness of strike shows on the obverse stars, but there are no mentionable marks or spots on either side.

1822 1C AU Details NCS. XF40 EAC. N-13, Early Die State, High R.5. The "Newcomb-13" die combination, so-listed as it was next in the sequence, was actually unknown to Howard Newcomb at the time of his large cent research. This variety was discovered only a few short years after the Newcomb reference was published; Willard Blaisdell was the first to identify an example in 1947. The Blaisdell discovery coin is now considered third finest known. Similarly, this example is a new discovery of the variety, having been previously unknown to the wide body of advanced large cent collectors. The sharpness of this cent is perhaps a tad nicer than the EAC grade, and it certainly has been cleaned and recolored. However, the surfaces are very pleasing with excellent color. The surfaces have medium steel-brown color with bright orange around the devices, this latter color resembling original mint luster. This is an early die state with bold and crisp dentilation. The obverse die crack through star 7 is visible down to Liberty's neck. NCS Improperly Cleaned.

1822 1C MS63 Brown NGC and EAC. N-2, Late Die State, R.3. The obverse is cracked from the border over star 7 through the outer points of stars 8 through 11, to the border over star 12. Only occasionally does this variety come with a perfect obverse die. Considerable original red mint color is present, enough so that some have considered this to be a Red and Brown cent. Where not red, the surfaces are light brown with gold and olive tones. This is an outstanding cent with only a few small stains and abrasions.

1822 1C MS62 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. N-12, Late Die State, R.4. The reverse rim is slightly dished at 12 o'clock and all die cracks described by John Wright are visible. This is the Newcomb plate coin for the obverse of N-7, 8, and 12 and also for reverse K. A Condition Census cent; tied for second finest of the variety, and one of only five or six Mint State examples that are known; the finest is considered an MS63 grade. Slightly reflective surfaces with attractive olive-brown color accented by pale blue and steel toning. The first two stars at lower left are slightly weak, but all the other stars are sharply defined. The devices on both sides are also equally well-defined. This is a nicely centered impression with full obverse and reverse border details. A small diagonal mark in the left obverse field will serve as a pedigree marker, as will a few minor spots on both surfaces. Only a few other scattered abrasions are noted. A highly attractive example of the variety, destined for the connoisseur's cabinet.

1822 N-4, R.2. Sharpness of Mint State 61 Brown, net Mint State 61. Tied with several others as the sixth finest known for the variety. A stunning coin that boasts light-brown and glossy color with hints of bluish toning near the devices. The surfaces are choice for the grade, with few disturbances visible, even with a glass. Boldly struck on Liberty, and most of the stars are full. Identifiable by a toning spot below Liberty's ear. This is certainly one of the most beautiful 1822 cents in existence, and with a pedigree to match.

1822 1C XF45 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. N-9, Early Die State, R.5. The reverse appears only slightly later than the N-8 cent in the previous lot. Newcomb recorded this as his Die State I. He recorded three Die States with I and II listed as extremely rare and die state III described as the highest degree of rarity. This is the rarest of the 12 varieties that were known to Newcomb when he compiled his reference that was published just after his death. John Wright noted that "collectors have clamored after it for decades." Approximately 60 examples of this variety are known today, with this specimen ranked as 10th finest. Various observers have described it as either Fine 15 or VF20 based on EAC grading, and we feel that Fine 15 is the appropriate determination. The surfaces have olive and light brown color with traces of deeper steel brown around the devices. Very minor raised verdigris is visible on both sides, and most of this could probably be removed with judicious effort. This is a highly attractive example of the variety with only minor abrasions as expected for the grade.

1822 1C VF20 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. N-13, Early Die State, High R.5. A similar die state to the other N-13 in this sale, but this coin is worn just enough so that the obverse die crack is nearly invisible. This example is tied for eighth finest known of about 40 examples. At the time this coin was offered in the Floyd Starr catalog, it was described as third finest of just over a dozen known coins. An excellent lower-valued alternative to the finest known example of this variety, also offered in this sale. Dark olive and steel surfaces are quite choice, save for a thin vertical scratch from star 13 up to the protruding hair lock behind Liberty's neck. Several insignificant imperfections are present at the center of the reverse.

1822 1C MS63 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. N-3 Late Die State, R.2. This example is a slightly later die state than the other N-3 in this sale. The border dentilation remains quite crisp, the die crack appears constant through the base of MERICA to the right ribbon, but the die dot between TA is absent. The surfaces have frosty luster with lovely light brown color. Hints of olive and darker brown are present including a small spot in front of Liberty's bust line. Very faint traces of original red color are present on the reverse. This is an important opportunity for both the specialist and for the date collector.
