1841 PR 66 Brown PCGS. Of the 14 proofs certified of this date by both services, this is the finest example graded and presumably the finest known. While labeled as a "Brown" coin, the surfaces have a remarkable amount of life with small traces of bright mint luster still surrounding the devices. Elsewhere the fields are bright with iridescent lime-green and blue color, deriving much of their sheen from the proof finish. A couple of dozen proofs were struck according to Breen, and six were sold in the Chapmans' Eavenson Sale of 1903. With this coin's color and overall splendid preservation of surfaces, it is not much of a stretch to believe that this is one of those pieces, which allegedly were consigned from the estate of Patterson DuBois. 1841 1C PR64 Brown PCGS. N-1, R.5. This is a proof-only die variety, and the only variety of 1841 that was coined in proof format. Attractive surfaces with fully mirrored fields, enhanced by lovely lilac and pale blue color, along with the addition of green toning on the reverse. The obverse has considerable underlying faded mint red. A small surface mark in the field at the tip of the nose, and a spot at the second T of STATES, serve to mark the pedigree of this piece. Although one past cataloger suggested a surviving population of only two dozen proof examples, the true population is probably in the range of 40 to 50 coins. EAC PR62.

1841 PR 65 Brown NGC. An even chocolate-brown color on both obverse and reverse, paired with a razor-sharp strike, make this a coin for the finest large cent aficionado. The surfaces are defect-free with nice reflectivity. Only 4 pieces have been graded PR 65 or better, making this a rarity in gem condition (11/98). (PCGS# 1952)
