1859 1C PR67 NGC. Designed by James Barton Longacre, the Indian cent made its debut in 1859. This initial delivery displayed a simple reverse design with the denomination ONE CENT enclosed in a laurel wreath. Since Longacre's oak wreath and shield motif was adopted in 1860, the 1859 has become doubly important as a one-year type. In the late 1850s, proof sets were not as popular among collectors as they are today, and a sizeable percentage of the 800 specimens reportedly struck was undoubtedly melted as unsold. This nearly flawless, razor sharp representative has acquired a hint of violet patina in the fields, but is totally void of carbon and is otherwise essentially as made nearly a century and a half ago. 1859 1C PR66 PCGS. Government records indicate that the Philadelphia Mint delivered 800 proofs in this, the first year of production for James Barton Longacre's classic Indian Cent. Not all of these coins were distributed, however, and many were retained at the Mint and destroyed at year's end. Writing in 1992, Rick Snow estimates that only about 100 coins are extant, all of which are in demand among proof type collectors who recognize the one-year status of the 1859. This is among the more attractive examples that this cataloger has handled, with deeply set olive-gold color beneath warmer orange-tan highlights. Fully struck, the frosty textured devices appear to float atop glistening fields. Wispy carbon flecks are absolutely minimal in number. Population: 18 in 66, 1 finer (7/02). (PCGS# 2247)

1859 1C PR66 NGC. Broad borders, razor sharp striking detail, and glowing reflectivity in the fields readily identify this coin as a proof. There is also a reverse die chip (as produced) between the denticles just before 12 o'clock that is diagnostic of the reverse die used for the proof 1859 Indian Cent. The otherwise honey-tan color yields to pastel tinged champagne, apricot, and lilac shadings as the surfaces dip into the light. Striations (also as struck) are seen at the same angles, but there are expectantly few blemishes for the premium quality Gem grade. Although federal records report that 800 proofs were made in this, the first year of the Indian Cent series, many examples were melted as unsold at year's end. A rare date, survivors are always in demand for first-year proof type purposes.

1859 1C PR65 PCGS. This is one of the most attractive Gem quality representatives of this issue that this cataloger has seen. The surfaces are toned in tan-brown shades that yield to effulgent golden iridescence toward the borders. Lilac-blue undertones are also noted in the centers, the razor sharp strike is evident from rim to rim. Survivors of this first-year delivery are anything but common, as many of the 800 pieces originally produced were melted as unsold. (PCGS# 2247)

1859 PR 66 NGC. This is a simply stunning proof survivor from the first year of this hardy and popular series. The boldness of impression extends to every feather tip and each leaf spine. The otherwise smoky-tan surfaces show intermingled olive highlights and bright crimson-orange undertones. As befits the grade, the placid faces exhibit no distractions. 1859 1C PR 66 PCGS. Designed by James Barton Longacre, the Indian cent made its debut in 1859. This initial delivery displayed a simple reverse design with the denomination ONE CENT enclosed in a laurel wreath. Since Longacre's oak wreath and shield motif was adopted in 1860, the 1859 has gained numismatic immortality as a one-year type. Proofs of this issue are rare, despite the fact that Mint records show a not insignificant mintage of 800 pieces. In the late 1850s, proof sets were not as popular among collectors as they are today, and a sizeable percentage of this issue was undoubtedly melted as unsold. Both sides of this coin are free of grade-limiting hairlines and contact marks. The color is predominantly olive-orange in shade, but a swirl of lighter patina is noted over the upper reverse. Modestly reflective, this is an uncommonly well preserved coin for an early proof delivery. Population: 15 in 66, with a single coin finer (10/00).

1859 1C PR66 PCGS. A second, and even finer representative of this challenging issue, this Gem quality specimen is in select company at the present grade level. Both sides are beautifully patinated in honey-tan shades that yield to competing gold and pink undertones at certain angles. The devices are fully impressed throughout. 1859 1C PR 66 PCGS. As the premier Indian cent and the only date of this type to display a laurel wreath on the reverse, the 1859 is a perennially popular coin among type collectors. Proofs were produced to the extent of 800 pieces, most of which were melted at the end of the year. This fortunate survivor is smooth from rim to rim with moderately glowing fields and nicely frosted devices. The color is a rich, original, tan-pink shade.
