1858 3CS MS67 PCGS. The final year of the Type Two design for Three Cent Silvers and the most procurable issue in better grades of Mint State. This outstanding example is overlaid in beautiful, dappled shades of gunmetal-blue and rose, with excellent strength of strike that wanes only slightly in the peripheral areas. Die clashing is evident on both sides, but of course does not affect the technical merits of this exceptional example. Population: 10 in 67, 0 finer (10/03). (PCGS# 3674)

NGC 1858 MS 67. An awe-inspiring, untoned example that is made even more eye appealing by its heavily frosted devices. The backdrop for these utterly white features are highly lustrous with an almost semi-prooflike sheen and display wispy die polishing on either side. The obverse lettering, as if most often the case with the Type Two design, is a trifle soft. We could hardly imagine a finer, fully brilliant three-cent silver. Population: 4 in 67, none higher. 1858 3CS MS67 NGC. This is the final year of the Type Two design subtype, and is one of the more commonly available issues in all grades up through the Gem level. At the Superb Gem grade, however, this becomes a tremendous rarity as NGC has graded only 12 such examples to date (3/06), with none finer. None of those others is likely to surpass this example in terms of either eye appeal or technical merit, as the shimmering surfaces display rich, swirling tones of gunmetal-blue, crimson, and golden-olive patina. It is virtually absent of marks or abrasions on either side, although evidence of light die clashing is evident. A gorgeous "trime" that is ideal for a Superb Gem type set or for a specialized high grade collection. (PCGS# 3674)

1858 3CS MS66 PCGS. Type Two Three Cent Silver Pieces are a scarce and worthwhile type coin. Seldom seen in high grades, most examples are heavily worn, indifferently struck, or lackluster. This is certainly an exception to that rule. Brilliant throughout, the surfaces on this piece show bright, flashy mint frost, and the striking definition is strongly defined throughout. 1858 3CS MS66 PCGS. Type Two three cent silver pieces were a short-lived series that was produced from 1854 through 1858. They are also the most difficult to locate in high grades. This holds true also for the 1858 even though some 1.6 million pieces were produced that year. This piece retains much of the original mint brilliance with a light overlay of golden-rust patina. Sharply struck with almost complete definition on the leaves on the reverse. Population: 20 in 66, 10 finer (2/04). (PCGS# 3674)
