1858 H10C MS67 PCGS.
The 1858 is one of the more available dates among With Stars half dimes with 3.5 million pieces produced. This is one of the absolute finest examples known of the date as well one of the finest of the type. The mint luster is thick and heavily frosted, this being an obviously original and untampered coin. Pale rose coloration is seen over each side of this mostly brilliant coin. Well, but not fully struck with die clashing seen on both obverse and reverse. Exceptional quality. Population: 10 in 67, 1 finer (7/04).

A fully lustrous Superb Gem that has only a hint of striking incompleteness in the centers. Generally brilliant, although a few faint tan freckles adorn the obverse. Clashmarks are limited to the field above the wreath bow. Housed in a green label holder. A desirable Stars Obverse type coin. Population: 11 in 67, 1 finer (4/06).

V-4. Open 5 in the date, the second 8 is low and tilts wildly to the right. The skirt pendant is over the right tip of the 5, and the pole is of normal length on this obverse. An immaculate coin, there are no surface marks of any note on either side. In fact, the only ripple in the fabric of this coin are the pronounced die clash marks seen on the reverse. Full cartwheel luster glows beneath an original deep lavender toning that turns to blue at the margins. While there are more 1858 half dimes available than most other dates, due to a hoard released some years ago, in MS 67 it is of obvious importance to the collector of high grade type. Population: 7 in 67, 2 finer (4/94).

Well struck, with little of the frequently-seen central softness of this date, and nearly mark-free. This Superb Gem also displays excellent luster, and gorgeous deep purple-rose toning on both sides, while a few faint die clash marks (as struck) rest on the upper reverse field. Population: 12 in 67, 2 finer (7/03).

1858 MS 65 PCGS.
Breen-3090, Double Date. Although the holder does not specify this die variety, one cannot help but notice the obvious doubling of the digits of the date, first punched far too high, then corrected half its height lower. Breen states this is at least 10 times as rare than the better known 1858 over inverted date listed in the
Redbook.
This specimen exhibits gray-golden toning over both sides and is generally well struck except on the stars (as usual). A few clash marks in the fields are about the only surface distractions we note on this gem.

1858 H10C MS67 NGC.
Exceptionally clean and problem-free overall, there is only a slight bit of striking softness evident on the devices. Each side shows a bit of die clashing, this being the only interruption in the soft, mint frost that covers each side. A special type coin and an excellent representative of the With Stars type. Population: 13 in 67, 2 finer (3/04).

Well struck with ample luster and lovely electric-blue, rose, and golden colors. No distracting blemishes were found on either side of this imposing premium quality Gem, using a magnifier, but a small luster graze, in the upper right obverse field, is noted for the sake of accuracy. Population: 41 in 66, 14 finer (2/04).

While Mint State coins are always available from a hoard uncovered years ago, Superb examples such as this one are rarely offered in the marketplace. The heavily frosted surfaces are well struck and mostly brilliant with a wide accent of deep russet and blue toning around each side. Die clash marks are the only surface disturbances on either side of this outstanding With Stars half dime. Population: 10 in 67, 2 finer.

Slight traces of champagne color are visible over frosty ivory surfaces. This is a splendid and Superb Gem with sharp design elements. The final 8 in the date is titled to the right, giving the entire date an outwardly curved appearance. Population: 18 in 67, 3 finer (1/05).

This pre Civil War half dime displays bright, lustrous surfaces that exhibit whispers of champagne color. The design elements are sharply impressed, with just a couple of the star centers displaying softness. No mentionable abrasions are noted over each side. Some as-struck clash marks are seen over both obverse and reverse. Population: 15 in 67, 2 finer (6/05).

This coin was previously offered as lot 6147 in our September 2002 Long Beach Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "A common coin, at least in an absolute sense, the 1858 (3.5 million coins produced) is a popular issue among type collectors. This pristine, mostly frosty-white example would satisfy the most discerning numismatist. There are a few isolated sprays of golden iridescence around the peripheries, and bold clashmarks (as struck) abound in the fields. On the other hand, grade-limiting abrasions are essentially nonexistent, and the strike is pleasingly sharp throughout. Worthy of inclusion in the finest collection." Population: 11 in 67, with a mere two finer (10/02).

Unlisted in Valentine. A textbook example of Breen's "retouched hub." The pole has been polished off the die above and below Liberty's hand and does not end in her lap but above it. Cascading drapery from the elbow appears as a disconnected jumble resting on her knee. This amazingly bold "naked eye" variety is not described by Valentine. The coin displays a moderate gray patina on the obverse with light bits of peripheral golden toning, while the reverse is a cool blue with some light colors at the margins. Superb surfaces overall. Population: 30 in 66, 6 finer.
