1822 50C MS 66 NGC. O-106, R.3. This coin is incorrectly labeled on the insert as an 1822/1 overdate. The most spectacular Capped Bust half dollar that this cataloger has ever seen, there is ample evidence for us to call this one of the first impressions with this die pair. The devices display razor sharp, if not full striking definition over nearly every feature. There are also several die scratches (as produced) along the obverse rim below star 13. Overton does not mention these scratches in his book, so it is likely that they were polished away in middle and later die states. In addition, the lower base of the second 2 in the date is heavy and recut. This feature probably also faded with subsequent impressions, and it may have misled NGC into labeling this coin as an 1822/1 overdate. There is a hairline-thin mark in the lower obverse field before the date, but the balance of the surfaces are all but abrasion-free with a crisp, frosty sheen. A rich overlay of crimson-copper and cobalt-blue toning rounds out this coin's list of positive attributes. This Gem is tied for finest certified honors with one other MS 66 NGC example (10/00). 1822 MS 66 PCGS. O-114, R.3 as a business strike, R.8 as a proof. Eliasberg. A controversial coin that will have experts falling on both sides of the proof/non-proof question when this coin is viewed. First, proofs are known from this date and from this die variety. There is apparently at least one other proof 1822 from the O-114 dies, that being in the John Jay Pittman holdings. While opinions may vary about the nature of this coin (we believe it to be a special striking), we completely agree with the description of this special half dollar as cataloged in the Eliasberg Sale, which we repeat in part:
"...all details are exceptionally well defined. The borders are even and crisp. Cameo devices are surrounded by reflective mirrored fields including between the reverse dentils. Pale rose is blended with orange-gold which, in turn, changes to vivid blue iridescence. Both obverse and reverse have very tiny marks which are reflected in the surfaces.
"The mirrored fields are complete including at the junction of the fields and devices. There is reflective surface within the individual stripes of the shield on the reverse as well as partial mirrored surfaces within a few letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM...Although the intent of striking the present coin and its circumstances of distribution are not known, it seems likely that a die pair was given a highly polished finish, this despite the reverse having already seen some use."
The consignor purchased this coin from the Eliasberg Sale believing it to be a bona fide proof. He backed up his belief with his pocketbook, paying $27,000 for the coin in that landmark sale. However, the coin was not certified as a proof by PCGS. There may be a mechanical reason this piece is not in a proof holder. When looking in the Eliasberg catalog at the 1822 halves, we were stumped at not being able to immediately identify which coin this was. The coin simply does not match any of the identifiers on any of the pieces photographed in the catalog (PCGS# 6129)

1822 50C MS66 NGC. O-108a, R.3. This is from a late state of the dies with a peripheral crack through the date, bust and lower stars to the right and left. The reverse has similar cracks through the lower design elements and much of the peripheral lettering. Pale lavender toning with wisps of rose and blue near the borders. This is a lovely Gem with exceptional luster and considerable eye appeal. While not a rarity in overall terms, this is a highly desirable example, one of very few early half dollars to reach this lofty grade. For the entire design type from 1807 to 1836, NGC has certified just 204 examples as MS66, and only 48 higher grade coins, including a single MS69. (PCGS# 6129)

1822 50C MS65 PCGS. O-110, R.2. Undoubtedly one of the finest if not the finest specimen known of this variety. The Condition Census as listed in the third edition of Overton is (63, 63, 60, 60, 60). This is an original example that has dusky gray, charcoal, and soft rose patina that is several shades deeper on the reverse than the obverse. Sharply defined throughout with no obvious surface defects on either side. Population: 8 in 65, 4 finer (9/04). (PCGS# 6129)

Sharply defined throughout, the surfaces are bright and highly lustrous, even beneath the multiple layerings of toning seen on each side. Nearly flawless, the iridescent colors are indescribable and add tremendously to the overall eye appeal of this Gem. (PCGS# 6129)

Extremely sharp throughout, with no mentionable flatness on any of the tell-tale areas. 1822 50C MS64 PCGS. O-106, R.3. This so-called overdate has a small lump below the lower right curve of the 2 which resembles a 1. More than likely, however, this is not an actual overdate but simply a damaged punch or die chip. The surfaces are brilliant throughout and highly lustrous. Very sharply struck on each side, the only disruption in the surface of the coin is a faint horizontal grease stain on the middle of Liberty's neck. According to Overton's third edition, this is a mid Condition Census piece as the C.C. is listed as (65, 65, 63, 63, 63). A lovely, high grade example of this interesting 1822 variety.
