1906-D 50C MS67 PCGS. This is one of the most incredible coins in this phenomenal collection. The surfaces are finer than one would expect even for this coveted grade, and virtually no signs of contact can be found save for a very faint nick below Liberty's chin in the field and a couple of the most insignificant ticks on the lower portion of Liberty's neck. Majestic toning which ranges from fiery sunset-gold on the obverse periphery to pastel blue and green over a frosty gray base. The colors are more intense on the reverse, with vibrant russet-gold over luster with a few splashes of blue and antique silver intermixed. Sharply struck by the dies, with no softness on the obverse star centers or on the reverse arrow feathers. Considered by experts to be a very rare date in gem condition which has been confirmed by the NGC and PCGS population reports. In fact, this is the only MS67 specimen graded by either service, and there are none graded higher. This coin certainly has a legitimate claim to be the Finest Known of the date. 1906 was also the first year of operation for the new Denver Mint, and this coin was obviously set aside and very carefully preserved since the day of its striking. When the auction hammer falls, perhaps this coin will earn a price worthy of the true rarity and quality it deserves. This is neither the Price nor the Eliasberg coin, and we are uncertain where or when our consignor acquired this magnificent coin. (PCGS# 6505)

1906-D 50C MS66 PCGS. A precious Premium Gem example with prooflike obverse fields and frosty reverse luster. Both sides have light peripheral gold toning. It is a sharply struck coin with splendid eye appeal. Struck at the opening of the Denver Mint, which a few years later would replace the New Orleans Mint as the preeminent coinage facility for the middle part of the country. This is nearly the finest obtainable quality. Population: 6 in 66, 1 finer (3/06).

1906-D 50C MS66 PCGS. The premier Barber Half Dollar produced in the Denver Mint, the 1906-D, with a respectable total of 4 million coins struck, is a common coin in an absolute sense. On the other hand, few people seem to have bothered saving a pristine example, and this issue is now recognized as scarce to rare in all Mint State grades. This is a beautiful coin from the standpoint of both surface preservation and originality. Bountiful mint frost shimmers beneath warm apricot-gold and olive-gray toning that yields to electric-blue and mint-green shades in most areas around the peripheries. Sharply struck, save for weakness on obverse star 3 and on the eagle's right (facing) claw, and expectantly abrasion-free for the desirable MS66 level of preservation. 1906-D 50C MS 66 NGC. On February 9, 1906, shortly after the Denver Mint began operations as a branch mint, Frank M. Downer, superintendent of the new facility, sent a message to George F. Heath in which he stated: "Replying to your inquiry I would say that this institution has coined a few half and quarter dollars. No proof coins have been struck and there probably will be none." From these humble beginnings, the Denver Mint would grow to its current status as the producer of over 50% of our circulating coinage. This gorgeous gem from the Joseph Collection offers an advanced collector the opportunity to acquire an early striking from the Colorado branch mint. Somewhat weakly impressed, the eagle's feathers betray the mushiness of detail that all too often plagues this series. The balance of this coin's features, however, are free of criticism. The brilliant surfaces display contiguous frosty luster that is unbroken by even the faintest abrasion. A golden opportunity for the gem-quality collector to acquire one of the finest certified examples of this historically important half dollar. Population: 2 in 66, none finer (6/99).
