1859 $1 PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. This coin was struck from the same die marriage as the PR65 NGC specimen that sold as lot 4087 in our April 2002 sale of the Morris Silverman Collection of Silver Dollars. The obverse die is easily identifiable by repunching on the base of the 1 in the date; this is the only known obverse for this proof issue. There are at least two reverse dies, and the one used to strike the present example is attributable by remnants of an inner circle at the denticles above the UNI in UNITED.

The second year in which the Mint made a concerted effort to market proofs to the collecting public, 1859 witnessed the production of a respectable total of 800 Seated Dollars. Based on the number of coins extant, it is unlikely that more than 450 examples were actually sold by year's end. The balance of the mintage went to the melting pot. While there are enough lower grade survivors to satisfy less discerning collectors, the specialist who has one eye on aesthetic appeal and the other on technical quality will soon find that the proof 1859 was not a carefully preserved issue. Most survivors (and, indeed, the majority of specimens that pass through the hands of catalogers at Heritage) display some measure of bothersome hairlining. It is truly a significant sale where we can offer a coin at the PR65 or PR66 level, but the appearance of a Superb Gem in one of our auctions is definitely an event that comes around once in a numismatic lifetime.

We have neither seen nor heard of a proof 1859 Seated Dollar that is as beautiful as the present specimen, and we doubt whether one exists. The obverse is awash in rich charcoal toning that passes through pink-lilac and honey-gold iridescence as one's eye moves toward the center. Direct angles reveal not only golden-blue undertones near the rims, but also uniform reflectivity throughout. The dominant charcoal and antique-copper reverse colors yield to electric-blue peripheral highlights as the coin turns into the light. Ther (PCGS# 7002)

1859 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo NGC. Beginning in 1859, the mint made definite efforts to market proof coins to the then-fledgling coin collecting community, and proof issues from this date on, while still rare, are more available than those of prior years. Stone-white devices have unimprovable contrast with the deeply mirrored fields. The upper reverse field displays a few wispy striations of mint origin. The base of the 1 in the date is recut. The Guide Book reports a production of just 800 proofs, and only a handful of survivors can approach the lofty preservation of this spectacular white on black premium Gem. The present piece is the only one certified as Ultra Cameo by NGC, and PCGS has not encapsulated any examples as Deep Cameo. (PCGS# 7002)

1859 $1 PR67 NGC. Of the 800 proof Seated Dollars that the Philadelphia Mint prepared in 1859, no more than 450 pieces found their way into collectors' hands. As the anticipated public demand failed to materialize, the remaining pieces met their fate in the melting pot. Research indicates that fewer than 250 specimens probably have survived, including many impaired pieces. Certainly, very few survivors achieve the lofty Superb Gem designation of the coin offered in this lot. Indeed, it is one of the three finest examples certified by NGC (10/05). No 1859 dollars in PR67 or better condition have been seen by PCGS.
The present specimen displays repunching on the base of the 1 in the date. Only visible under a loupe, this feature is diagnostic of all proof 1859 dollars. This beautifully toned representative is one of the lucky few that saw meticulous care from the beginning. The strike is needle sharp in all areas, including bold definition on the sandal of Liberty's foot. Lovely cobalt-blue, lavender, and gold-brown toning gravitates to the borders, leaving the centers nearly brilliant. The surfaces are impeccably preserved, displaying just a few minor marks on the Liberty motif. A couple of lint marks beneath Liberty's right (left facing) breast, and a minute circular surface imperfection in the upper right obverse field, serve to identify the piece.

Fewer than 250 specimens are believed to survive, including many impaired pieces. This beautifully toned representative is one of the lucky few that saw meticulous care from the beginning. The strike is needle sharp in all areas while lovely turquoise and golden-violet toning gives way to elliptical areas of near-brilliance on each side. Several minor imperfections on the portrait are a product of striking and not to be confused with post-minting contact. Of the 1859 proof Dollars offered over the years by Heritage, only the incomparable Kaufman specimen, an NGC PR67 that realized nearly $49,000, is appreciably finer. 1859 $1 PR65 NGC. Beginning in 1859, the Mint made definite efforts to market proof coins to the then-fledgling coin collecting community. These plans did not meet with immediate success. Although 800 proof Seated Dollars were produced this year, it is unlikely that more than 450 examples were distributed. The balance of the coins were melted as unsold at the end of the year. This beautiful survivor is every bit the Gem. The eye appeal is nothing short of breathtaking, with warm champagne-gray patina that yields to halos of electric-blue iridescence at the denticles. The glassy fields and fully impressed features are readily evident at all angles, but we can find no hairlines or contact marks that are worthy of concern. A small strike through (as produced) in the lower right obverse field before Liberty's shin is perfect for establishing the pedigree of this aesthetically appealing and technically pristine specimen.

We know of only one obverse die for this issue, and it is easily identifiable (at least with a loupe) by repunching on the base of the 1 in the date. Two reverse dies are known, but Bowers only gives diagnostics for one of these. It is identifiable by remnants of an inner circle at the denticles above the UNI in UNITED. This is the reverse die used to produce the present 1859 representative, as well as the PR64 PCGS restrike 1852 and the PR63 PCGS 1854 examples in this collection. (PCGS# 7002)

1859 $1 PR 65 PCGS. Even though this coin's toning inhibits the underlying reflectivity of its fields, the microscopic repunching on the 1 clearly establishes it as a proof striking. The Philadelphia Mint records that 800 proof silver dollars were produced in 1859 but, as many of these remained unsold at the end of the year, upward of 600 were probably destroyed. Numismatists believe that fewer than 175 of the originally released specimens are extant today, with the vast majority impaired. This original gem, however, is clearly among the finest certified survivors. The reverse impression is essentially full but, in true Seated dollar fashion, the top of Liberty's head and a few of the surrounding stars display slight striking incompleteness. Antique olive-copper toning blankets both sides with isolated swirls of blue iridescence peeking through. The pristine surfaces reveal no distractions worthy of attention. Even enthusiasts of brilliant proofs would surely agree that this is an extraordinarily attractive dollar. Population: 6 in 65, 3 finer (6/99). (PCGS# 7002)

1859 PR 65. There are very few high grade business strike 1859 dollars known, placing even greater pressure on the small proof production of this year. The mint mistakenly overestimated the public demand for proof coinage in 1859 and struck off 800 silver dollars. A large number of these went unsold at year's end and at least 350 pieces were melted with no more than 450 actually distributed. But even this number seems on the high side from the scant population we are familiar with today. This is an intricately detailed striking that shows razor sharp definition on Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's plumage. There are a few stray hairlines in the fields, but these have little effect on the overall attractiveness and desirability of the coin. Brightly mirrored, the coin has a mostly brilliant appearance with faint suggestions of speckled golden-lilac color scattered across each side. From the Riverly Collection.
