1862 $1 PR65 NGC. Beginning in 1862, the mint did not offer proofs for sale on an individual basis. Rather, clients were required to buy the entire proof set. Since the mint prepared 550 proof sets in 1862, this is the accepted mintage figure for the proof Seated Dollar of this date. Curiously, all of these sets were no sold in the year of issue. Some were retained until the mid 1870s, at which time they were re-offered to collectors. Survivors of the proof 1862 Seated Dollar production are more numerous than those of the proof 1861, being similar in overall rarity to the 1859 and 1860. Like most P-mint issues from this era, the 1862 is seen more often as a proof than as a well preserved business strike.

This lovely Gem is well mirrored in the fields with electric-blue and crimson circling the obverse. The reverse is a more even steel-blue and gold color. Every feature is fully struck, and there is a small patch of handling marks visible in the left obverse field adjacent to Liberty's hand. Population: 18 in 65, 8 finer (7/04). (PCGS# 7005)

1862 $1 PR66 NGC. The numismatic references with the most detailed information on proof Seated Dollars (Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1977 and Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia by Q. David Bowers) do not offer much information on the die diagnostics of the 1862. In fact, the Bowers' reference simply restates what Breen wrote in 1977: the date is centered with a slight slant up to the right, while on the reverse two arrowheads are joined and an inner circle is evident at the denticles above the UNITE in UNITED. Both authors also state that the Mint also used this reverse die to deliver certain restrike proof 1853 Seated Dollars.

The year 1862 is the first in which the Philadelphia Mint stopped offering proof Silver Dollars for individual sale. A total of 550 proof sets of silver and minor coins were prepared that year, but only 430 sets had sold by February of 1863. Curiously, those sets that remained unsold were not melted. Rather, the coins were locked in a vault, retrieved in the mid-1870s, and offered to collector once again. We do not know if the remaining 120 coins sold at that time, but we suspect that most, if not all did since this issue is among the most frequently offered proof Seated Dollars from the Civil War era.

This lot offers a conditionally rare, premium quality Gem that is unsurpassed in grade at either NGC or PCGS. Both sides are typically free of distracting handling marks, and the fully brought up features display pleasing reflectivity as the coin rotates beneath the light. The otherwise antique-copper toning reveals off center swirls of lavender and apricot color toward the right borders with undertones of cobalt and gold iridescence. A series of tiny, shallow planchet flaws (as struck) in the lower right obverse field should help trace the pedigree of this important and desirable specimen. Only six examples have been so graded by NGC and (PCGS# 7005)

1862 $1 PR66 NGC. Ex: Sweet Collection. Just the one die variety is known for the year, and it is from a reverse that was used later to produce 1853 Restrike dollars. This reverse has a faint arc along the dentil tips over UNIT. The third line of the first vertical shield stripe extends upward to crossbar 3. On the obverse, the date slants up slightly to the right. The officially reported mintage figure for proof dollars of this date is 550 coins, although estimates have ranged from there, down to 430 coins, the number actually sold. NGC has certified one finer example, graded PR67. Beneath the lovely original toning may be seen exceptional mirrored surfaces and considerable cameo contrast, even though this example is not so designated. The surfaces have rich coppery-gold color, surrounded by electric blue and pale amber color toward the border. The reverse is a bit darker in overall color. Census: 9 in 66, none finer (1/06). The fields are deeply mirrored and they add significantly to the brightness of the gray, sea-green, and rose toning that graces both obverse and reverse of this spectacular coin. The surfaces are essentially flawless with no obvious contact marks or other post-striking impairments on either side. A unquestioned Gem proof and thoroughly original.
