1873-S T$1 MS65 NGC. Splashes of rich orange toning visit the fields, while apple-green colors occasionally frequent the obverse margin. A lustrous and spectacularly preserved Gem, the reverse appears immaculate and the obverse is also unusually clean. A mere whisper of struck-in grease near the olive branch does not deny the outstanding eye appeal. The strike is well above average, the right (facing) claw and Liberty's forehead curls have strong if not complete detail. The quality is remarkable, and the present piece belongs in the finest specialized Trade Dollar collection. The first year 1873-S is very scarce in any Mint State grade, and is a formidable rarity as a Gem. Census: 3 in 65, 1 finer (10/05).

1873-S T$1 MS64 NGC. The San Francisco Mint began Trade Dollar production in July 1873, and a respectable total of 703,000 coins were produced by the end of that year. As one would expect for an S-mint issue in this series, the 1873-S was widely exported, many of the coins being subsequently melted in China or India. Uncirculated examples are quite rare, and this issue may very well be the most difficult S-mint Trade Dollar to locate in Mint State. This lightly toned near-Gem is among the finest coins known to both NGC and PCGS, who have certified 32 specimens in MS64 and just 7 pieces finer (10/05). Its surfaces radiant bright luster and display sharply struck design features. A few minor abrasions on Liberty's cheek and neck and in the obverse fields define the grade. Census: 13 in 64, 4 finer (10/05). (PCGS# 7033)

1873-S T$1 MS64 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint began Trade Dollar production in July 1873, and a respectable total of 703,000 coins were produced by the end of that year. As one would expect for an S-mint issue in this series, the 1873-S was widely exported, many of the coins being subsequently melted in China or India. Nevertheless, enough circulated coins are extant to supply most collectors with a decent VF, XF, or AU representative for their date or first-year type sets. Uncirculated examples are, however, rare, and this issue may very well be the most difficult S-mint Trade Dollar to locate in Mint State. This lilac tinged near-Gem is among the finest coins known to PCGS. The surfaces are fully frosted in luster quality with only a few wispy, mostly inconspicuous abrasions. Typically struck for the type, yet with suitable definition over all but the highest points of the design. Population: 10 in 64, with a mere three finer (1/02). (PCGS# 7033)

1873-S T$1 MS64 PCGS. The first-year San Francisco issue in the Trade dollar series is scarce in MS64, and only a handful of finer pieces are known. This near-Gem displays coruscating, brilliant mint luster with only a few small marks, including a singular graze in the left reverse field. Liberty's head and the eagle's right (facing) leg show minor strike softness. Population: 31 in 64 (2 in 64+), 4 finer (2/22).

1873-S T$1 MS64 PCGS. A popular issue, as the only collectible 1873-S dollar. Soon after coinage began of the Trade dollar, it became obvious that San Francisco was the logical place to mint these coins that would be exported to the Orient. This piece shows a pretty silver-blue cast over potent luster, with slight milkiness in the fields. A few stray contact marks on each side define the grade. Population: 23 in 64, 3 finer (6/06). 1873-S T$1 MS64 PCGS. Almost immediately after they were authorized and production began, it was realized that the San Francisco Mint would be the logical location for Trade Dollar coinage, as most of these coins would be exported to the Orient. The mintage totaled 703,000 coins, and nearly all of them were exported and eventually melted or chopmarked. Today, this issue is rare in high-grades, but quite common with chopmarks. This brilliant example has light champagne color over the entire surface on both sides with satiny luster. Minor striations are visible, mostly on the reverse, from the planchet preparation process. In addition, fine vertical die finishing lines are visible in the fields on both sides. Population: 19 in 64, 3 finer (8/05). (PCGS# 7033)
