1875 MS 68 PCGS. Several well-known gold rarities were produced at the Philadelphia mint in 1875 and, among non-gold issues, the Trade dollar from this year is certainly the most difficult to acquire. A relatively small population out of the modest mintage of 218,200 coins has been spared from melting or impairment (cleaning, chopmarks, etc.), and a few dozen mint state pieces apparently survived, including a handful of very choice examples. None, however, can even approach the glorious, near-perfect surfaces of this amazing business strike Trade dollar. Its fields offer shimmering, cartwheel luster and are essentially void of blemishes. On both sides, delicate rings of golden patina outline the peripheries, accompanied by a thin die break that completely encircles the reverse. The devices of this coin stand out in their frostiness and completeness of strike. Only on Liberty's foot is there any sign of coin-to-coin contact. Even among the most common, best preserved issues in the Morgan dollar series, the appearance of an MS 68 example is a noteworthy offering. The mere existence of a Trade dollar in this near-ultimate condition is staggering. This spectacular example stands alone as the only 1875 and the only coin of its type to have been certified by PCGS as such (4/97). (PCGS# 7037)

1875 T$1 MS65 NGC. Type Two Reverse, with no berry under the right (facing) claw. This is an exceptionally attractive coin overall. The mint luster is thick and frosted, and hints of light tan color make an occasional appearance. The design features are nicely struck, with no areas displaying major weakness. A few very minute marks in the fields are not at all offensive or distracting. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only ten examples in MS65, and five specimens finer (10/05).

1875 T$1 MS65 NGC. Primarily a product of the western branch mint in San Francisco, it is little wonder that only 218,900 Trade Dollars were produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1875. This is an originally toned survivor with competing swirls of antique-copper, lavender-gray, and blue-gray colors on each side. The number of small abrasions is remarkably few for a silver coin of this size, and the sharp strike is also impressive for this often poorly impressed type. Population: 8 in 65, with only two finer (5/01).

1875 T$1 MS64 NGC. Type Two Reverse. A scarce date in the business strike format, if apparently a tad less rare than once believed. This example is nonetheless among the less than three dozen or so certified in near-Gem condition, with 14 coins finer at NGC and PCGS combined (12/06). The deep, original toning is in shades of amber-gold and iridescent blue. A few light abrasions limit the grade, but the eye appeal is high. Census: 15 in 64, 11 finer (12/06).

1875 T$1 MS64 PCGS. Type One obverse, Type Two Reverse. The brilliant, essentially untoned surfaces reveal a pronounced prooflike finish on each side. Well struck at the centers, pronounced softness is seen at the obverse border and the lower right portion of the reverse rim. Both sides show a few scattered hairlines and a small mark or two, these being typical for the assigned grade and surface finish. An underappreciated issue, just 218,200 pieces were struck, and Uncirculated survivors are far more elusive than their high mintage San Francisco Mint counterparts. Population: 16 in 64, 3 finer (12/05).

1875 T$1 MS64 NGC. Type Two Reverse. Deeply toned in steel-violet and antique-golden shades, with more than adequate sharpness throughout. Far fewer Trade Dollars were produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1875 (just 218,200 business strikes) than at the Carson City or San Francisco facilities, and Choice or better Mint State representatives are legitimately scarce. In fact, 1875 proofs are also much easier to find than business strikes at this level. Population: 12 in 64, 12 finer (11/04). (PCGS# 7037)
