1862 $1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. The 1862 is a popular proof date for several reasons. It was struck during the Civil War. The associated business strike production was only 11,540 pieces. Proofs were limited to 550 pieces, some of which were likely melted as unsold. Few proofs have survived in Gem condition. In fact, the present piece is tied with one other as the finest certified by PCGS(9/06). For pedigree purposes, we mention a small planchet flaw in the field near the lower right drapery. Delicate gold toning near the borders denies full brilliance. Impressive cameo frost is uniform throughout the devices and legends. The strike is good, although there is a hint of softness on the peak of the left (facing) wing and on Liberty's knees. Many advanced numismatists have undertaken the challenge of assembling a set of proof Seated dollars, and the No Motto issues are invariably scarcer than their Motto counterparts.

1862 $1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Just 550 specimens were coined during this Civil War year. This piece is deeply reflective with exemplary contrast between the champagne-toned fields and the frosted devices. Though not a Gem, this coin's flaws are minor: faint hairlines and a contact mark above the shield on the obverse, and a planchet flaw below the A in STATES on the reverse. Highly appealing and worth a strong bid. Population: 5 in 64 Cameo, 2 finer (8/06). (PCGS# 87005)

The fields are deeply mirrored and there is a significant amount of mint frost over the devices, which gives the coin a profound two-toned cameo appearance. Unlike proofs struck today, in the 1860s no thought was given by the Mint to producing a cameo proof. In fact, such a term was unknown until relatively recently. The white-on-black appearance so desired by collectors today was merely the product of the use of a new pair of dies. Only a few coins from each die pairing had such contrast, and when it faded after a few strikes no effort was given to renewing it. Population: 2 in 64, 2 finer (7/02). (PCGS# 87005)
