1865 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo NGC. This is the final obtainable Proof Seated Dollar of the No Motto type. Like many other of these Proof Seated Dollars, there appears to be a little confusion regarding the description of the obverse, confusion that could lead to the "discovery" of a new variety, when that is not actually the case. Walter Breen stated "Shield point minutely left of tip of 1," a description repeated by Dave Bowers. The actual position of the shield point is slightly left of the top of the 1, or minutely left of the upright of this digit. If the "tip of 1" is interpreted as the extreme left edge of the serif, then the shield point is actually to the right of this element. The reverse is lacks any type of unusual identifying characteristics, other than a faint arc joining the dentil tips over UNIT. The Jack Lee Collection specimen is an amazing example of this coinage with fully brilliant silver surfaces on both sides, and highly lustrous devices surrounded by deeply mirrored fields. When held to the proper angle of light, it has an exceptional and highly desirable black and white appearance. The NGC Population suggests to us that this or another example may have been resubmitted one or more times. Population: 6 in 66, 0 finer (10/05).

1865 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo NGC. The final year of No Motto Seated dollar production, 1865 is also a desirable Civil War year. Many of the 46,500 business strikes produced this year were exported and subsequently melted, a fact that underscores the importance of the present proof offering. The decades that have elapsed since this coin left the Philadelphia mint have not tarnished either its technical merits or its aesthetic charm. Both sides are free of mentionable hairlines and the deeply reflective fields sparkle at all angles with a completely brilliant appearance. Sharply struck, as expected, with pleasing Deep Cameo contrast. (PCGS# 97008)
