1829 1C Large Letters--First Strike Brockage Reverse--AU55 PCGS. N-8, R.1. Although properly attributed as the "Large Letters" reverse, the brockage impression eliminates any possibility of making such a determination, other than die variety attribution. Newcomb-8 is the only variety of 1829 that has star 6 pointing clearly left of the coronet point. One other obverse (that shared by N-1, 4, and 5) has the sixth star pointing slightly left of the coronet point. This error consists of the normal obverse design with a mirrored and incuse impression of the obverse in place of the normal reverse design. Light olive-brown color with hints and splashes of darker brown color. An attractive piece, and a highly desirable large cent error. EAC 30. (PCGS# 1663)

1829 1C Large Letters MS63 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. N-7, Die State II, R.4. A popular variety of 1794 large cent, Sheldon-33, is known as the "Wheelspoke" variety due to radial die cracks on the reverse. This Newcomb-7 variety of 1829 is the Wheelspoke counterpart among the middle date cents. This example is a middle die state with four wheelspoke cracks on the reverse: at 2 o'clock through the first A of AMERICA, at 4 o'clock through R of AMERICA, at 6 o'clock from the border to ribbon, and at 10 o'clock between D of UNITED and S of STATES. The surfaces have splendid dark chocolate color with light olive on the highpoints of the devices, and considerable orange luster near the borders. A small line-like abrasion on Liberty's neck still retains original orange color, suggesting that this blemish occurred at the Mint, or very shortly after being minted.

1829 1C Large Letters MS64 Brown PCGS. N-2, R.2. A die crack travels through the first four stars, another crack connects the final three stars. IBER of LIBERTY are very close and touch at the bases. The choice surfaces of this Cent display the full cartwheel effect with deep olive-brown color highlighted by golden toning mostly over the reverse. A premium Choice Uncirculated example worthy of a strong bid. Population: 4 in 64, none finer (11/05).

1829 1C Large Letters MS64 Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-2, Late Die State, R.1. This lovely cent is tied for third finest known of the commonest 1829 cent variety. Fewer than 100 Mint State 1829 large cents survive, including all die varieties combined. Only two of these varieties, N-2 and N-6, can be considered even remotely common in high grades. This example is sharply struck with a full obverse border and a partial reverse border. The hair details and stars are all complete, as are all of the leaves in the wreath. The surfaces have attractive olive and steel-brown coloration with splashes of faded mint red, more so on the reverse.

1829 1C Large Letters AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. N-4, Late Die State, High R.4. The obverse has rim breaks over stars 3, 4, and 5, and the reverse has a die crack through R. The reverse die was later used for the N-7 "wheelspoke" variety of 1829. The reverse crack through the R is the first of the N-7 spokes. This is the usually seen late die state of the N-4 die combination. Relatively sharp for the variety, with light wear on the highpoints of the design. This is a lovely example of the variety that is certainly within the expanded Condition Census even though it is not listed in Del Bland's notes. The surfaces have lovely chestnut-brown color with hints of lighter tan around the devices and darker chocolate brown on the design elements.

1829 1C Large Letters MS65 Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-8, Late Die State, R.1. A late die state with the obverse rim crumbling from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock and the reverse rim crumbling over CA. This is a magnificent Mint State large cent that is tied for third finest known. Described as the fourth finest known in Superior's catalog of the Century Collection, which included John Nicholas' cent collection. The choice surfaces of this cent display the full cartwheel effect with deep olive-brown color highlighted by bluish toning and considerable original orange luster. John Wright called this an "easy variety that pulls no premium." Come to the sale, and watch this one pull a premium.

1829 1C Large Letters MS63 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-1, Usual Die State, R.2. The Newcomb-1 die variety is considered common, yet is quite difficult to locate when you want one. It is scarce above Very Fine and much harder above XF. This example is probably tenth finest known for the variety and a wonderful cent with splendid golden-brown color on both sides. Traces of dark steel toning are visible on certain of the highpoints and around some of the devices. Bright splashes of original orange mint color are visible around a couple of the stars. The reverse has wisps of faded mint red along with pale blue and lilac toning. The impression is well-centered on both sides with full borders. Considerable weakness is visible on both sides, and especially on the reverse. All of the leaves below ES OF are flat, as are the inside leaves and the ribbon bow below CENT. The O of ONE is weak and the C of CENT is similarly weak. John Wright noted that the E of CENT is usually weaker, but on this example the E is bold.

Well-centered with full obverse and reverse dentilation, and with the reverse rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. Apparently an early die state without any evidence of the reverse die crack that eventually appears over ER of AMERICA.

(1829-1837) 1C Medium Letters Large Cent--Full First Strike Reverse Brockage--XF40 PCGS. Referred to as a brockage obverse on the PCGS holder, but only the reverse designs are present. This error is caused when a planchet sticks to the obverse die, then fails to eject. Another planchet (this piece) was fed in, and struck between the reverse die and the reverse of the unejected piece. A perfect brockage, since the reversed and incuse design shows no evidence of distortion or spreading. A charming golden-brown example, and the ultimate attribution challenge for the specialist. EAC 20.

1829 1C Large Letters MS62 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-8, Early Die State, R.1. This is the second most common 1829 variety, and the third most plentiful in high grade. Sharply struck with full hair detail, sharp stars, and strong leaves. A well-centered impression with full borders, the obverse wide and the reverse narrow. There is no evidence of any rim breaks within the obverse dentils. This is a pleasing example with intermingled light tan and darker olive-brown on the obverse, mostly darker olive on the reverse.
