1861 1C PR66 PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. Ex: Heathgate. This is the single finest proof 1861 Indian Cent graded by PCGS (10/02). Registry Set collectors who are competing for top honors need this coin--expect fierce bidder competition. This is a beautiful example with frosty devices and moderately deep mirrors in the fields. A few small, identifying contact marks are visible on the reverse over the N and E in ONE. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding example of this exceptionally elusive date in the proof copper-nickel Indian Cent series.

The difficulty that collectors face in finding outstanding survivors of this is due to poor methods of production at the Mint. Most of the proof Cents delivered this year received only one blow from the dies, and neither the obverse nor the reverse were extensively polished prior to striking. Although 1,000 pieces were originally produced, only approximately 400 coins were released. The survival among those coins that actually left the Mint is also low, as many substandard examples are believed to have been spent or mistakenly included in collections as business strikes. The present Gem has been given an Eagle Eye Photo Seal by Rick Snow that attests to its quality.

1861 1C PR66 PCGS. Among specialists, the 1861 is known as a poorly produced issue in the copper-nickel series. Most of the proofs of this date appear to be singly struck and of inferior quality to other copper-nickel proofs. This piece, however, presents the collector with an atypical coin. The obverse fields are heavily polished, so much so, in fact, that they have a concave appearance. The reverse is more difficult to assess as that side is covered with a moderate layer of toning that is not seen on the obverse. Fully struck throughout also with none of the striking weakness so often seen. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (10/03).

1861 1C PR66 NGC. Mint records indicate that 1,000 proof 1861 Cents were produced. However, 600 pieces were melted as unsold at year's end, and others were placed into circulation and are unrecognizable as proofs today. Some 150-250 pieces are believed to have survived. Few, of course, are Gems and only two other pieces have been given such a lofty grade as this coin by the major certification services (4/02). This is a splendid, deeply mirrored example. The obverse has bright, almost white coloration while the reverse shows a bit of light, hazy gray-rose patina. The surfaces appear flawless, even under magnification.

1861 1C PR 66 NGC. It is unlikely that more than 400 of the 1,000 proof Indian cents delivered this year actually left the Mint. With the Civil War looming large on the horizon, the coins that were released also had to survive the danger of being placed into circulation. One of perhaps 150 survivors, this flashy Gem is devoid of even the most trivial carbon fleck. Distracting hairlines are also conspicuously absent, and the tan-pink surfaces are fully defined in all areas. A pair of small planchet flaws (as struck) are noted over Liberty's neck. NGC and PCGS combined report only three coins in PR 66, with none finer (10/00).

1861 1C PR65 PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. Beginning with a substantial original mintage of 1,000 pieces, there are probably fewer than 150 proofs extant today in all grades of this year. This is a very attractive example that has bright orange-red color over each side, the coloration being even more pronounced as it is backlit by the flashy proof mirrors in the fields. Virtually contact-free and an exceptionally attractive coin.

1861 1C PR65 PCGS. It is believed, by Ronald Sirna among others, that the 1861 was a singly struck proof. This would explain the poorer overall quality of proofs generally found with this date as well as the overall softness of strike. This particular coin, however, appears to have been more carefully produced, and judging from the definition on the ends of the feathers on the headdress it seems to have been struck twice. While the sharpness of strike will appeal to many collectors of this short-lived series, the bright "whitish" appearance of the coin will appeal to others as it closely approximates the color of these coins when new. The fields are also nicely mirrored and the coin overall is quite attractive and far superior to most 1861 proofs. Population: 14 in 65, 2 finer (10/03). (PCGS# 2256)

1861 1C PR66 NGC. Writing in the December 2002 issue of "Longacre's Ledger," Ron Sirna, Jr. opines that the 1861 is the rarest date in the proof copper-nickel Indian Cent series of 1859-1864. He also states that the Philadelphia Mint's lack of care during production may explain the rarity of this issue, particularly in grades above the PR64 level. Since many examples received only one blow from inadequately polished dies, numerous proof 1861 Indian Cents were probable spent, melted as unsold, or otherwise mishandled.

The premium quality Gem in this lot easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. Both sides shimmer with uniform brightness and evenly distributed golden-tan color. Needle sharp striking definition is noted throughout, but there is not a single grade-limiting blemish in evidence. One can, however, see a pair of identifying planchet voids (as produced) over Liberty's neck. NGC and PCGS combined have seen a mere five specimens in PR66, and none finer (1/03). (PCGS# 2256)

A couple of spots are seen on the Indian's neck, and there is a single mark through the O of ONE on the reverse. 1861 1C PR66 NGC. A well struck and beautifully preserved Gem that has a lovely snow-white appearance overall. Interestingly, the first 1 in the date has a different serif style than the final 1. For pedigree purposes, a couple of small planchet indentions (as struck) are seen at the lower portion of the Indian's neck. While the Guide Book suggests a mintage of 1,000 pieces, many were eventually melted as unsold by the Mint, and this example represents one of only 5 thus far graded PR66 (PCGS and NGC combined) with none finer (7/03).
