1923-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Truly a difficult date to find in such a splendid state of preservation. Seldom is this issue encountered with full red color, and, although slightly subdued, this piece certainly merits that designation. The '23-S is often found weakly struck, but this example doesn't show the normal mushy details one would expect. Instead, the reverse wheat lines show full separation, and Lincoln's beard lacks only minor detail. A few small carbon flecks are found on the obverse, and there are a mere handful of tiny, nearly microscopic contact marks on the two sides combined. A faint toning spot, directly above the U in UNITED, on the reverse, provides the most noticeable distraction, but even this is minimal, and certainly represents no challenge to the assigned grade. 1923-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Joshua and Ally Walsh. The 1923-S is an extremely rare coin in Gem Red condition, a situation that the prevalence of certified grading has made abundantly clear. Despite a mintage of nearly 9 million pieces, most surviving examples are circulated. The paucity of Mint State examples that have survived tend to be mostly brown, and the issue as a whole is notorious for weak strikes. True Gem Red coins such as the present specimen are seldom seen, and represent the finest quality available to a few select Lincoln cent aficionados. As of (7/06), PCGS has certified 16 Gem Red examples of the 1923-S. This is less than the 1913-S, the 1914-D or '14-S, and about equal to the number of 1917-S and 1918-S survivors certified at that service.

The exceptional coin offered here displays bold definition in all areas, with the mintmark crisp and clear, and Lincoln's beard, hair, and coat details all well brought up. The reverse strike is equally bold, with none of the usual weakness seen on the motto or denomination. There is only a slight mellowing of the golden-tan surfaces. A few wispy carbon flecks are scarcely visible in the fields, most being muted by a thin veil of patina to the right of the portrait. An unsurpassed opportunity to acquire what must now be acknowledged as one of the true keys to a Registry-quality Gem Red Lincoln collection. (PCGS# 2548)

1923-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Perhaps no other Lincoln Cent issue gained more respect from the advent of third party grading than the 1923-S. The issue's mintage of 8.7 million pieces is low, but not alarmingly so, and lightly circulated examples can easily be located in dealers' inventories. However, Uncirculated pieces tend to be more brown than red and the quality of strike is notoriously poor. When enough coins had been certified for population figures to be meaningful it became apparent that the 1923-S Lincoln is a very scarce item with full red color and especially so if it qualifies as a Gem.

The exceptional coin offered here displays bold definition in all areas and only the slightest mellowing is seen over golden-tan surfaces. A few wispy carbon flecks are scarcely visible in the fields, most being muted by a thin veil of patina to the right of the portrait. One of the more important Lincolns in the remarkable Mershon Collection. Population: 16 in 65, 0 finer (3/05).

1923-S 1C MS65 Red NGC. An attractive, unabraded, and virtually carbon-free Gem that has consistent rose-gold color. The strike is bold for the issue, with no apparent weakness on Lincoln's shoulder or the O in ONE, although die wear (as made) has softened some of the details of the design. Scarce in all Mint State grades, the 1923-S is generally found in Brown or spotted Red and Brown condition. Population: 2 in 65 Red, none finer (11/04). (PCGS# 2548)
