1924-D 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Tom Mershon Collection. The 1924-D is a semi-key issue with only 2.5 million pieces produced. It is generally only encountered in grades below XF, and glowing red Gems such as this are especially scarce. Each side has lovely sunset-red coloration with a smooth, even appearance and soft golden undertones. Unusually sharply struck with no conspicuous abrasions on either side. About 20 degrees of counterclockwise die rotation is also noted. Undoubtedly, one of the finest 1924-D Cents we have handled. Population: 33 in 65, 1 finer (3/06).

1924-D 1C MS65 Red PCGS. This issue's comparatively low mintage of just over 2.5 million pieces is enough to have thrust it into semi key status for several generations of collectors. Gem Uncirculated survivors, particularly those with full red color, are more than deserving of the issue's notoriety. This lustrous golden-red example is better struck than the typical '24-D and displays an arc of deeper orange iridescence about much of the reverse. Population: 32 in 65, 1 finer (11/05).

1924-D 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Tom Mershon Collection. This is a semikey Lincoln cent issue that is scarce in all grades, and much in demand from Lincoln aficionados. Full red Gems such as the present specimen are extremely rare and elusive. According to Lange's The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents, "Even lower quality uncirculated 24-D's are very few and far between and these usually have defects of one sort or another. The strike is generally weak to moderate--but seldom really sharp; the color is generally splotchy and/or deeply toned to a reddish brown--with accompanying spots. Fully brilliant and spot-free examples are very scarce."

This example boasts no such distractions, with delectable orange-red surfaces front and back, no observable carbon, and a well-executed strike that shows slight weakness only on the 4 in the date. Like many examples of this issue, the reverse is rotated about 20 degrees from the obverse. To Lincoln cent collectors, the Mershon pedigree is a definite plus. 1924-D 1C MS65 Red PCGS. This Denver issue is notably scarce in Gem Red condition, and finer pieces are prohibitively rare. We have not handled a finer Red example of this date in 14 years. The present coin displays satiny copper-red surfaces with uniform color and satiny luster. A single toning spot appears at Lincoln's forehead and serves as a pedigree marker. The reverse is rotated about 15 degrees counterclockwise, an anomaly not often seen on this issue. Ideal for Registry purposes. Population: 48 in 65 (7 in 65+), 1 finer (4/22). (PCGS# 2554)

1924-D 1C MS65 Red PCGS. With just 2.5 million pieces delivered, the '24-D is a semi-key issue that is difficult to locate in all grades. Writing in 1996, David Lange noted that "fully red, choice and gem [1924-D Cents] are very rare." The present Gem displays warm orange-copper luster with a hint of muting on the reverse. For future identification, a small toning spot is seen to the lower right of the mintmark. While this date is not known for sharp striking detail, this coin is free of most bothersome incompleteness of detail with overall bold definition. A satiny and smooth survivor that should have little trouble finding its way into an advanced Lincoln Cent date collection. Population: 29 in 65, 1 finer (10/04). (PCGS# 2554)

1924-D 1C MS65 Red NGC. Although the 1924-D is well known as a semi-key in all grades, coins that grade finer than VF are particularly elusive. As one might surmise, the certified population of this issue dwindles rapidly as one approaches and then crosses the Gem threshold, particularly when full Red luster is present. This golden-orange survivor displays a bright, fully lustrous sheen that shimmers in the absence of outwardly distracting blemishes. Sharp striking definition enhances the already impressive eye appeal. Population: 12 in 65 Red, with just two finer (7/02).
