1804 25C MS63 PCGS. B-1, High R.3. First year of the Heraldic Eagle design and one of just 6,738 pieces struck, few of which survive in grades above Fine. Only 14 Mint State examples are known to both services combined. For years the scarcity of the 1804 Quarter was eclipsed by the better known and single-year type from 1796, a coin of similar mintage and rarity.

This is a very beautiful, indeed captivating coin, with gorgeous, iridescent turquoise-blue toning predominating most of the surfaces, intermingled with light gold at the border areas. The details are well centered and are framed with broad, square borders, and the underlying surfaces are bright, and somewhat glossy. Overall, the striking is quite good, but with some normal lightness on two of the stars above the eagle on the reverse, and the cloud above, is noted, but in no way detracts from the coin, as this feature is standard. Several mint-made adjustment marks are mentioned for future pedigree purposes, including several diagonal ones across Liberty's blouse and breast. Some less noticeable ones are seen at 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock on the obverse rim. An important opportunity for the advanced collector. Population: 2 in 63, 3 finer (3/05). (PCGS# 5312)

1804 25C MS62 PCGS. B-1, R.4. A sharply struck example of this desirable rarity. The major devices display impressive definition, and only the two highest reverse stars are faint, as made. Richly toned in tan-brown and steel-blue colors, the reverse is beautifully unabraded, and the obverse has only a couple of brief horizontal marks, one above the mouth, another beneath the jaw. Some light and unobtrusive obverse adjustment marks, as made, are generally localized to the dentils and shoulder.
The production of Quarters was minimal in the early years of the U.S. Mint, since depositors preferred more convenient Silver Dollars. The 1804 is a famous rarity, by far the rarest date within the five year Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type. Just 6,738 pieces were recorded as minted, slightly more than the 6,146 pieces struck for the even better known 1796. While the 1796 is certainly significant, it is actually more available than the 1804, particularly in Mint State. PCGS has certified 32 examples of the 1796 in Mint State, while that service has only encapsulated 6 1804 Quarters. Yet the 1804 is priced significantly beneath the 1796, which could well change in the future once the true rarity of the 1804 in Uncirculated grades is fully appreciated.

1804 MS 61 NGC. Pittman. B-1, R.3. First year of the Heraldic Eagle design and one of just 6,738 pieces struck, few of which survive in grades above Fine. For years the scarcity of the 1804 quarter was eclipsed by the better known and single-year type from 1796, a coin of similar mintage and rarity. Medium gray-violet and antique-gold toning lightens only along the right obverse margin and, with little exception, the surfaces are very well struck. A few short adjustment marks are noticed along the obverse rim and through the drapery above the date. Easily one of the more desirable 1804 quarters we have ever had the privilege to offer.

1804 25C XF40 NGC. B-1, R.4. This variety has the space between BE in LIBERTY about twice as much as on the R.6 B-2 variety, and there is a small die flaw that left a mark between stars 8 and 9. This specimen shows medium-intensity pinkish-gray surfaces with lighter highpoints. Aside from the moderate circulation wear, there are few distractions on either side, save for a single tick on the bustline. (PCGS# 5312)

1804 25C AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS. B-1, High R.3. The second Quarter in U.S. coinage history, the 1804 is also the first issue of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type. Only 6,738 pieces were produced, and the 1804 is well respected as a key coin in all grades. This lot offers a pleasing higher grade example with slightly dull surfaces from the cleaning. The well centered impression retains ample definition for the grade, and the number of abrasions is not excessive. (PCGS# 5312)

1804 25C Fine 15 PCGS. B-2, High R.6. A rare variety, Browning-2 is distinguished by a high 4 in the date and a final star that is further distant from the bust truncation. Of course, the low mintage 1804 (just 6,738 pieces struck) is one of the key dates of the entire denomination. Rich mauve and gold colors bathe this nicely detailed and relatively unabraded example.
