1842 $1 MS64 PCGS. The 1842 dollar, with a business strike mintage of 184,618 pieces, is plentiful in grades from VF to AU, and is occasionally available in the lower Mint State grades of MS60 to MS63. The issue is scarcer in higher grades; indeed PCGS and NGC have certified fewer than 40 near-Gems and no examples finer. The MS64 specimen offered in this lot displays prooflike tendencies in the fields, especially on the obverse, highlighting sharply impressed motifs. Die polish lines are evident on both sides, again being more pronounced on the obverse. A few minute marks on Liberty's portrait, the reverse shield, and in the right obverse field preclude a higher grade. Population: 22 in 64, 0 finer (3/06). (PCGS# 6928)

1842 $1 MS64 PCGS. When collectors and numismatists gather around to discuss rarities in the Seated Liberty dollar series, the 1842 issue is seldom mentioned, although it should be for examples are seldom seen in Mint State grades, especially approaching Near-Gem quality. In almost two decades of coin certification, PCGS has still only graded 19 examples of this date in MS64, and none finer, and that total certainly includes several resubmissions of the same coins. In his 1993 Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Dave Bowers estimated the total Mint State population to be in the range of 75 to 125 coins, in all Mint State grades. Given current certification data, this estimate seems quite reasonable. In circulated grades, this issue is plentiful, given the original mintage of 184,618 coins, the largest mintage prior to 1859. This quality representative is virtually untoned with radiantly lustrous surfaces. Actually, there are not many distracting blemishes to begin with, and the strike, if not complete, is uncommonly sharp for the type. A very pleasing specimen overall. (PCGS# 6928)

1842 $1 MS64 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. Eliasberg purchased this coin as a proof, but the reverse die is different from that seen on proof 1842 Seated Dollars. Actually, the reverse die is the same that the Mint used to produce business strike 1843 Seated Dollars. Furthermore, the mirror surface on the reverse does not extend within the shield stripes, and the obverse is not as sharply struck in some peripheral areas as typically seen on proofs of this date. These diagnostics indicate that this coin is a prooflike business strike.

The eye appeal of this near-Gem is nothing short of breathtaking. Both sides display a glassy finish that is more readily evident on the obverse due to mottled crimson-russet iridescence on the reverse. The areas of noteworthy striking softness have already been mentioned, with the balance of the features exhibiting appreciable boldness. Striations (as produced) are noted in the fields, but the only useful pedigree marker is a tiny handling mark on the reverse outside the eagle's left (facing) wing.

Although more easily obtainable in Mint State than the preceding two issues in this series, the 1842 is anything but common above the AU grade level when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. In fact, neither NGC nor PCGS have seen a single coin at or above the MS65 level of preservation (1/02).

1842 $1 MS64 PCGS. Most Seated Dollar issues of the 1840s, the first decade of production, are relatively common in all grades through AU, yet are scarce or rare in full Mint State condition. This 1842 issue is such a coin, with a mintage of 184,618 coins and a substantial survival rate. PCGS for example, has certified 333 examples of this date, but only 68 of those received a grade of MS60 or finer. This is a lovely example that is tied for the finest certified, and it is certainly among the finest known for this date. The surfaces have lustrous gold and ivory color with light green at the borders. Some central weakness is present, but overall, the design features are well defined. Only a few scattered abrasions keep this from the Gem classification. (PCGS# 6928)

1842 $1 MS64 NGC. It is estimated by Bowers that 184,618 business strike 1842 dollars were minted. Bowers also notes, "Examples of the 1842 Liberty Seated dollar are occasionally available in grade levels of MS-60 to MS-63, but in higher grades the issue is a rarity. This is the first Liberty Seated dollar variety that has any claim to general availability in Mint State, but, even so, in absolute terms Mint State specimens are rare." The strike appears to be typical for the date, with some weakness noted on Liberty and on the eagle's feathers, especially at the top of the left wing. This specimen has bright silver surfaces with light contact marks noted on both sides of the coin. Census: 19 in 64, 0 finer (8/06). (PCGS# 6928)
