1849 $1 MS64 PCGS. This is a fully brilliant and highly attractive example, and seldom encountered so fine. This is an early die state, among the first of the 62,600 coins minted. On the obverse, unfinished die work is trapped between the chin and shoulder of Liberty. This is a nicely struck example despite weakness at most of the stars on the obverse. The surfaces are highly lustrous with soft frosty texture, and they have splendid pale gold color with deeper iridescent toning. Population: 7 in 64, 2 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 6936)

1849 $1 MS64 PCGS. Luminous peach, electric-blue, and mauve-violet colors enrich the obverse, while the reverse features tan and dove-gray patina. Somewhat satiny with the usual underlying semi-prooflikeness in the fields, this originally toned near-Gem is carefully preserved with only the smallest marks scattered over each side. Some softness of strike is noted, but the eye appeal is irrefutable. The dies are rotated counterclockwise approximately 10 degrees. Only 62,600 pieces were struck. Population: 8 in 64, 2 finer (10/05).

PCGS 1849 MS 64. As with all Seated dollars, the 1849 is a very scarce item in near-gem condition. This is a splendid example that is strongly struck in all areas. The surfaces show a soft, frosted mint luster with very little of the usually seen semi-prooflike finish common to most dollars from this decade. The coin mostly presents as brilliant but when closely examined one notices a thin layer of golden patina. There are a couple of small clusters of grade-limiting abrasions that prevent the coin from entering the gem category. On the obverse there is a small area in the right field out from stars 11-13, and on the reverse a series of parallel marks are noted above the eagle's head. Population: 3 in 64, only 1 finer (1/95). 1849 $1 MS63 PCGS. Most examples of this issue survive in XF to AU grades, so this bright, lustrous specimen with very faint light rose-gold color is clearly something very special. Some wispiness is noted, especially in the fields and a few stray contact marks are seen above the eagle and to Liberty's left. It is possessed of a nicely detailed strike with just a little weakness on the high points and in the eagle's tail feathers. This coin deserved a close look and a strong bid from the serious Seated Dollar specialist. Population: 17 in 63, 8 finer (12/04).

1849 $1 MS63 NGC. This is a well frosted coin for the grade with a dusting of golden iridescence that yields to mottled steel-lilac and dove-gray shadings around the peripheries. The strike is not full, but the overall definition is well above average for a Seated Dollar from the 1840s. The grade-defining abrasions are mostly confined to the upper reverse field. An attractive coin, and a find for the advanced specialist.

The Philadelphia Mint produced 62,600 Seated Dollars in 1849. This was the final year in the series in which those coins produced were placed directly into circulation. Interestingly, and despite similar mintages, the 1849 is more common in circulated grades than the first-year 1840. In Mint State, the 1849 is elusive, with most examples confined to the MS60-63 grade levels. (PCGS# 6936)

1849 $1 MS63 NGC. The 1849 is a scarcer issue from the 1840s, but it is one that can be located in Uncirculated condition once in a while. This piece has the often-seen semi-prooflikeness in the fields with a multiple overlay of mottled, deep, multicolored toning on each side. Sharply defined throughout, the depth of toning conceals the numerous small abrasions that are scattered over both obverse and reverse. (PCGS# 6936)

NGC 1849 MS 63. A scarce item in mint condition, very few were saved out of the mintage of 62,600 pieces. Well struck, the only areas of weakness are on the right stars and the upper portion of the eagle's wing--areas we have observed that are weak on one other coin of this date. The fields have a slightly reflective quality with die polishing marks apparent on either side. The untoned centers are framed by deep russet and sea-green patina at the margins on each side.
