1873-CC $1 MS61 NGC. Mint State examples of this date are extremely rare and highly desirable. Just 2,300 examples were coined early in the year, prior to legislation intended to halt production of silver dollars. Although the Coinage Act was passed in February 1873, it did not take effect until April 1, thus the 1,300 Carson City dollars struck during the month of March were legally issued. Dave Bowers estimated that only 750 to 1,000 examples out of the 2,300 coin mintage actually made it out of the Mint. The silver dollar had been the standard for much of the time that the United States Mint was operative, with the exception of the years from 1804 to 1835. That standard was discontinued in 1873, but it would be a short absence, as the silver dollar returned in 1878, and in larger quantities than ever before.

How many coins does it take to make a hoard? A popular story relates that a building was torn down in Carson City in 1973, and that it had been built in 1873. This story suggests that the cornerstone, containing the usual mementos from the time, included three Mint State 1873-CC Seated dollars. One of the three was sold at the 1973 ANA convention to dealer Fred Sweeney, and a second was sold in 1977. Whereabouts of the third piece remain a mystery. Could this be the third? And, is three coins enough to be a hoard?

This impressive Mint State example has dusky gray toning over pale golden-brown color. The surfaces are fully lustrous with satiny fields. A few small marks and hairlines are present, and expected for the grade. The design elements on both sides are sharply defined on this well-struck piece. The exact Condition Census for this issue is not known, although there are probably not more than a dozen Mint State examples of this date in existence. Census: 3 in 61, 2 finer (6/06). (PCGS# 6972)

1873-CC $1 MS61 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. Other than the nonexistent 1873-S and the prohibitively rare 1870-S, the 1873-CC is the rarest Seated Dollar issue. The tiny mintage of 2,300 pieces nonetheless exceeds that of the 1871-CC, of which 1,376 pieces were struck. However, the 1873-CC is even more difficult than the 1871-CC, particularly in VF to XF grades. This is likely because of the "Crime of 1873" legislation, which ended production of Silver Dollars in favor of Trade Dollars. Perhaps many 1873-CC Seated Dollars were melted, with the bullion reclaimed in 1873-CC Trade Dollars.

This boldly struck and lightly toned example exhibits good definition on the left (facing) claw and on Liberty's hair. The obverse luster is moderately prooflike, and the frosty Seated Liberty creates a mild cameo effect. The obverse field possesses a few wispy marks, but these are fewer in number and severity than is usual for the grade. Light gray toning graces the left reverse. The left (facing) wing feathers exhibit minor die doubling, and light mint-made clash marks are present near Liberty's raised arm and beneath the left wing. The wide CC reverse die was previously used to strike 1870-CC Dollars (reverse D). The combination of rarity, quality, and pedigree is formidable, and the present piece is worthy of the finest collection of Seated Dollars.

1873-CC $1 AU58 NGC. The 1873-CC is second only to the 1870-S in overall rarity among regular issue With Motto Seated dollars. Although it does not have the lowest mintage of the Carson City dollars (the 1871-CC has that distinction), the number of survivors is lower than any other CC date. Only 2,300 pieces were struck of the 1873-CC, and it is very likely that the majority were melted, with somewhere between 750 and 1,000 pieces actually released into circulation. The reason for the low mintage was simple: the mints were getting ready to produce the Trade dollar, which was also first minted in 1873. In a letter from Bob Julian to Q. David Bowers in 1992 and quoted from Bowers Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Julian suggests that "If the 2,300 were not called for by the silver depositor, it is likely that they would have been melted, and his bullion returned to him. It is my opinion, however, that all the coins were paid out and then perhaps redeposited for trade dollar coinage a few weeks later." To us, this seems like a somewhat cumbersome process, unless what he means is that local banks were ordered to redeposit Seated dollars for recoinage into the new Trade dollar design. In any case, very few 1873-CC dollars were in the channels of commerce and even fewer are known in AU and Uncirculated grades.

The finest examples known are three Uncirculated pieces that were found in the cornerstone of a building in Carson City that was torn down in 1973. Today the total population for Mint State 1873-CC Seated dollars is eight pieces (three at PCGS, five at NGC), but once allowances for resubmissions are taken into account there are probably no more than 3-5 examples actually in existence. In all grades, both of the major services have certified 107 pieces. Again, there are doubtless numerous resubmissions in that total number and the actual number of survivors is probably in the range of 60-70 pieces. When located, the 1873-CC is usually seen no better than VF or XF, with prob (PCGS# 6972)

1873-CC AU 58 NGC. This final-year Seated dollar rarity, one of just 2,300 pieces struck, is the most difficult of the four Carson City issues in the series, edging out the even lower mintage 1871-CC for that honor. Pieces even approaching Mint State are of the utmost rarity.
The surfaces on this well balanced specimen are mildly reflective beneath a uniform coating of gunmetal-gray and golden patina that tends to limit the effect of wispy hairlines. There is little or no evidence of actual wear, just stacking friction on the highest points of the obverse. Abrasions are no factor, but a series of short, parallel scratches below star 5 detract to a certain degree. The acquisition of this near-mint '73-CC dollar would certainly provide a magnificent centerpiece for virtually any collection of Seated Carson City coinage. Population: 2 in 58, 2 finer (2/99). 1873-CC $1 XF45 PCGS. Osburn-Cushing Die State b/b, faintly clashed. The reverse die is transitional, having been used to strike the 1870-CC-Reverse E, previous to its use in 1873.

Despite having the second lowest production of 2,300 Seated dollars at the Carson City Mint behind only the 1871 issue, 1873 is its rarest offering. Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing suggest that about 100 examples survive, and that many coins were melted to make way for the new Trade dollar design.

The present Choice XF coin displays lightly abraded and well-defined design elements. This well-struck dollar exhibits virtually untoned surfaces, with flecks of rainbow iridescence in the protected areas of the peripheries. The eye appeal is pleasing. The rarity of this sought-after silver dollar issue is well-known to Seated Liberty collectors, and we expect competitive bidding. (PCGS# 6972)
