PCGS 1854 PR 65. A rare Seated dollar and seldom seen in circulated grades, much less in mint state. Apparently, the vast majority of this issue was sent to the Orient to be used as "Trade dollars," and never returned to this country. For these reasons the proofs are important to modern collectors as they can serve as a substitute for the rare business strikings. In Breen's 1977 opus on U.S. proofs, he estimated that perhaps a couple of dozen proof 1854s still exist. That estimate may be on the high side, as only 7 proofs have been certified in all grades by PCGS (6/94), and this is the only gem.
The surfaces of this piece are deeply reflective and the obverse has taken on a deep gray patina overall with considerable underlying rose and golden coloration in the fields. The reverse serves quite a contrast with that side basically appearing brilliant. There is, however, a slight milky lilac patina. The devices are heavily frosted and contrast rather sharply against the depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. A special Seated dollar and a coin sure to generate much interest among bidders. 1854 $1 PR 64 PCGS. Between the terms of James Knox Polk and Abraham Lincoln, the United States failed to produce a single president whose impact on the country outlasted their tenure in office. To most Americans today, names such as Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, and James Buchanan fail to elicit anything more than a scratch of the head and a shrug of the shoulders. Like these men, Franklin Pierce was certainly not a dominant force in the White House. While he was able to defeat the Whig candidate, Winfield Scott, Pierce proved so inept at his office that he failed to garner the nomination from his own party for the election of 1856. Although his presence had little to do with it, Pierce's presidency introduced themes that would dominate the United States well into the 20th century.

Franklin Pierce was the chosen candidate of the Young America Democrats in the election of 1852. These Democrats, such as Lewis Cass of Michigan and Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, favored unlimited American expansion at the expense of Canada, Latin America, and those European powers that still held colonies in the Caribbean. While such a goal proved too lofty for the divided nation of the mid-1800s, the United States would eventually dominate the entire western hemisphere. In addition, the displacement and migration of numerous citizens in response to the California Gold Rush continued apace throughout Pierce's tenure. The restlessness and aspirations exemplified by the 'Forty-Niners' would not only win the west, but would also characterize the United States' quest for world hegemony in the early 1900s. One cannot help but wonder about the course of American history had the nation been blessed with a strong president during the turbulent years that preceded Fort Sumter.

The Liberty Seated dollar is an excellent numismatic representation of Franklin Pierce's personality and presidency. By 1853, the vast quantities of gold that flooded the east raised the intrinsic value of the dollar and (PCGS# 6997)

1854 $1 PR64 NGC. This coin was struck from the same obverse die (triangular shaped defect in the field above and after the 5 in the date) as the preceding example. The reverse die is that described by Bowers in his 1993 reference, and it is identifiable by scattered die file marks that slant down to the right in the reverse shield. Both sides are lightly patinated in golden-gray colors through which pleasing reflectivity shines at most angles. There are no outwardly distracting hairlines or other handling marks, and the strike is full in all areas. A shallow, squiggly planchet flaw (as struck) and a series of faint planchet streaks (also as produced) in the lower right obverse field are mentioned for pedigree purposes. There are also several small, dark spots scattered throughout the reverse, none of which are individually distracting. A second opportunity for the advanced collector to acquire an example of this elusive 1850s proof issue.

1854 $1 PR63 PCGS. In his 1993 Silver Dollar encyclopedia, Bowers describes only one die marriage for this proof issue. The obverse die is easily identifiable by a triangular defect in the obverse field above and to the right of the 5 in the date. It is likely that this is the only obverse die that the Mint prepared for the proof 1854 Seated Dollar. The reverse that Bowers describes is characterized by numerous die file marks that slant down to the right in the shield. The present coin does not display these features. Rather, it was struck from the same reverse die that the Mint used to produce the restrike proof 1852 and the proof 1859 examples in the Silverman Collection (see the catalog description for the latter coin for more about this die and its diagnostic features). We cannot find evidence of die rust on any of these three coins, so it seems likely that all three were struck in 1859-60. This would make the present 1854 a restrike. It is still possible, however, that this reverse die was first prepared and used in 1854, which would mean that there are two reverse varieties of the original proof 1854 Seated Dollar. Confirmation or refutation of these theories awaits positive attribution of more proof Seated Dollars from this era.

Regardless of whether or not this coin was struck in 1854, it is a rare and desirable representative of an issue with an extant population of no more than 35 pieces. In addition, the business strike 1854 is a significant rarity in high grades, a fact that may lend further support to the theory that the Mint restruck proofs of this date for distribution to collectors. This coin is identifiable by a shallow planchet flaw (as produced) in the obverse field near Liberty's left (facing) shoulder. There is also a group of small contact marks in the obverse field before star 1. Both sides are toned in alternating copper-russet and blue-gray shades with some brighter undertones that are evident at a few angles. The obverse impression is full, but the rev (PCGS# 6997)

1854 $1 PR62 PCGS. The 1854 Seated dollar is seldom seen in circulated grades, much less in Mint State. Apparently, the vast majority of this issue was sent to the Orient to be used as "Trade dollars," and never returned to this country. For these reasons the proofs are important to modern collectors as they can serve as a substitute for the rare business strikings. Of the 50 to 100 proofs estimated to have been struck, perhaps 25 to 40 are extant today. Even that estimate may be on the high side, as only 14 proofs have been certified in all grades by PCGS (6/05).

The surfaces of this piece have taken on a cloudy grayish-blue patina, and the reflective fields contrast nicely with the moderately frosted devices. The design elements are sharply struck, with the only weakness occurring at the top of the eagle's right wing, which is typical for the issue. A few wispy handling marks are noted in the fields. This is a special Seated dollar and a coin sure to generate much interest among bidders.

The fields are deeply reflective in spite of the overlay of electric golden, rose, and blue toning seen on each side. The surfaces have obviously been cleaned at one time, this being the cause for the unnaturally bright coloration of the coin. The rims are wide and fully squared. The only striking softness is seen at the top of the eagle's left (facing) wing. The only mark of note is a short hit in the upper left obverse field out from Liberty's shoulder. (PCGS# 6997)
