1877-S T$1 MS67 NGC. An exceptional Superb Gem that is undoubtedly one of the very Finest Known of this date. In fact, there are only 2 coins graded this high, one each by PCGS and the present MS67 by NGC. Toned with glorious light gold over most of the surfaces, with the desired antique appearance so becoming to any coin. Deeper gold adheres to the devices, which makes them stand out from the fields all the more on the obverse. Well matched on the reverse, with deeper gold, russet and blue tones which come alive when examined under a light. The surfaces really make this coin extraordinary, as they are virtually pristine. A 10X loupe fails to find more than a tiny tick here and there to attest to the passage of the intervening 127 years. How this coin survived in such immaculate condition defies imagination, but here it is. For identification we list the following trivial ticks, one on the motto below the U of TRUST, another left of the eagle's leg in the field adjacent and close to his knee. It would be hard to imagine a finer and more attractive example of this or any date Trade dollar.

Although one of the most common dates of the entire series, this particular coin is so far and away finer than virtually any other survivor, that it must be studied to be believed. Think how many lesser Trade dollars have been examined, when looking for just the "right" coin. A gash here, gouge there, funky color, uneven strike, moderate grade, whatever, all these combine to make the average Trade dollar just that, average. Therefore, when a stellar coin like this is offered, collectors step up to the plate and bid accordingly. Pursuing such quality is a part of human nature. In this particular case, the 1877-S is represented by a total of 2 coins in Superb Gem MS67, of course with none seen finer. American culture is such that having something bigger, better, finer, higher is something desirable in itself. This particular coin is at the top of the heap, it has a bigger, better, fin (PCGS# 7046)

1877-S T$1 MS66 PCGS. Type Two Obverse and Reverse. Breen-5814, Minute Mintmark. The height of the S mintmark is just under 1 millimeter in height. Both sides of this impressive Premium Gem representative exhibit dynamic cartwheel luster and are framed in colorful splashes of orange and sea-green iridescence. The striking details are well executed, with only a nominal degree of softness found on Liberty's head and surrounding stars. Despite a healthy mintage of more than 9.5 million pieces and a fairly plentiful supply of Uncirculated survivors, examples in the lofty condition are few and far between. 1877-S T$1 MS66★ NGC. The 1877-S has the highest mintage in the Trade dollar series with 9.5 million pieces produced, and it is a popular type coin. Uncirculated pieces are not that difficult to locate but high grade examples such as this one are very rare. Fully struck throughout, the surfaces have dazzling mint luster and are brilliant throughout. It would be misleading to call this a perfect coin; however, there are no obvious or distracting abrasions on either side and this piece is as close to perfection as we can remember in a Trade dollar.
