1880 T$1 PR67 PCGS. This consignor is well known to the staff at Heritage, and, even if his consignment does not convince everyone, we can certainly attest to the fact that he had an incredible "eye" for quality. Actually, we suspect that those who view the present Superb Gem will not have to be reassured of this fact. Mirrored and bright, the fields are silky smooth with nary a grade-limiting blemish to report. As befits the grade, the devices are equally well preserved, but there is some frosting in evidence that imparts modest cameo contrast. There are dustings of powder-blue color over some of the denticles and in select rim areas, and warm reddish-orange peripheral iridescence is also seen framing bright, untoned centers. The only criticism we have, and it is minor at best, is that a slightly uneven impression has left a few of the obverse star centrils a bit indistinct. Nonetheless, this is a gorgeous Condition Census representative of one of the most popular proof-only issues in the Trade Dollar series. Population: 5 in 67, with none finer (1/03).

1880 PR 67 NGC. Issued in greater numbers than any of the proof-only Trade dollar issues (1,987 pcs.), the 1880 is a date that can, without too much difficulty, be found in impaired proof condition all the way through PR 64. Its extreme popularity as a type coin makes it somewhat expensive, but still it is fairly obtainable even in PR 65 grade. Pieces such as this superlative example not only require a deeper pocketbook, but also a much greater diligence as the population thins out in the higher grades. The surfaces here show dazzling proof brilliance and in the small, relatively untoned window in the center of the obverse there is a hint of contrast between the fields and the devices. Covering the balance of the coin are fairly deep and concentric shades of reddish-gold and turquoise. Population: 11 in 67, none higher (4/95). (PCGS# 7060)

1880 T$1 PR66 NGC. A second and even higher grade 1880 Trade Dollar from the Silverman Collection, this blatantly original Gem is peripherally toned in golden-brown patina. The centers are untoned and bright, the finish is appreciably cameoed. A single distraction in the obverse field below Liberty's outstretched arm is the only mentionable blemish, but the eye appeal remains consistently strong at all angles. (PCGS# 7060)

Remarkably preserved and spectacularly untoned, the fields show unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity and the devices are heavily frosted, which, of course, results in a profound two-toned cameo contrast. Two tiny toning spots can be detected along the reverse border around 8 o'clock, a useful pedigree marker for the future. 1880 PR 66 PCGS. Issued in greater numbers than any of the other proof-only Trade dollar issues (1,987 pieces), the 1880 is a date that can, without too much difficulty, be found in impaired proof condition all the way through PR 64. Gems are quite elusive and the 1880's popularity as a type coin makes it somewhat expensive in PR 65 and better condition. Pieces such as this superlative example not only require a deeper pocketbook, but also a much greater diligence as the population thins out in higher grades. Deep, multicolored patina is layered over each side in rich shades of blue, rose, purple, and golden-brown. Without the aid of a light this deep toning tends to subdue the bright, mirrored flash in the fields--a reflectiveness that is immediately apparent when properly angled beneath a light source. There are no surface marks to distract the viewer's attention on either side. Population: 12 in PR 66, 2 finer (5/96). (PCGS# 7060)

1880 PR 67 NGC. Another extraordinary type coin from the collection of "The Hawk," Andre Dawson. The piece is virtually perfect from a technical standpoint and the visual appeal is unsurpassable. Mostly brilliant with just the slightest overlay of pale golden-rose patina. The fields are well mirrored, but curiously they also show faint evidence of flow lines. These short lines radiate outward and give the coin a very slight cartwheel effect which intermingles nicely with the mirrored finish. (PCGS# 7060)

1880 T$1 PR66 PCGS. A regal example of this proof only date which shows beautiful toning throughout. The centers are reddish-gold which darkens to rich dark blue near the rims on both sides. Fully struck as expected, and free of all but the most minute hints of hairlines. From a technical standpoint, this is a very scarce coin so well preserved, and virtually impossible to obtain in higher grades, certainly so with such lovely toning.
