1854-O $10 Small Date MS60 NGC. Moderately scarce as an issue, with the Small Date being the more common of the two varieties of the year. Mint State examples are extremely rare--NGC has seen just two MS60 coins, and one MS61, with none grading higher. PCGS has certified no Uncirculated specimens (10/05). Moreover, just six Mint State pieces have appeared at auction within the past ten years, none grading higher than MS61.

The MS60 coin offered here displays bright apricot-gold surfaces. Relatively sharp definition is noted on the design elements, though the hair over Liberty's ear is a touch soft. This piece actually exhibits nice luster for the grade, though the luster flow is occasionally broken by numerous tiny marks scattered about, particularly on the obverse. (PCGS# 8614)

NGC 1854-O Large Date AU 58. The scarcer of the two varieties of the year, and like its Small Date counterpart, very rare in AU condition. In fact, this is the finest 1854-O graded of either variety according to the Population Reports from PCGS and NGC. This is a lovely piece, typical in strike for the issue, with bright lustrous fields and a few scattered abrasions, none of which could be considered large or distracting. Trends $7750 in AU 50, unlisted any finer (12/14). (PCGS# 8614)

1854-O Small Date $10 AU 58 PCGS. Somewhat similar in appearance to the AU 58 1853-O offered above and, possibly, also from the Jackson, Tennessee Hoard. Frosty and well detailed with soft orange-gold color over very clean surfaces. A few light scuff marks can be seen on both sides, but this coin has the appearance of Mint State.

The 1854-O Small Date has long been called the more common of the two varieties of eagle produced at the New Orleans mint in 1854. A study of recent offerings, however, shows that it is actually scarcer than the Large Date, especially in higher grade. Nearly every high grade 1854-O eagle known is a Large Date and we are not certain if any Uncirculated 1854-O Small Date eagles exist.

PCGS 1854-O Small Date AU 50. The more common of the two varieties of the year, but not by as large a margin as claimed by Akers (1980). Taken as a date, the '54-O is comparable to the 1853-O, and relatively available in lower grades. However, in AU condition it is quite scarce and a desirable issue in that grade. We are fortunate to have three examples consigned to this sale, a most unusual occurrence. This is a relatively well struck coin that does show the usual softness on the obverse stars but actually has good definition in the centers. Nice orange-gold color and abrasion-free for the most part. Trends $6000 (12/14). (PCGS# 8614)
