1854-D $5 Medium D AU58 PCGS.
Variety 31-X. At the AU58 level, this is an excellent type coin if one is seeking a high grade representative from the Dahlonega mint. Some 51-59 examples are believed known today in the various AU grades, but few have the eye appeal of this piece--in fact, few Mint State coins appear as lovely and problem-free as this coin does. Sharply struck, the surfaces display brightness in the fields, as usual, with a rich overlay of reddish patina on each side. Both obverse and reverse are notable for their lack of abrasions. The most notable identifier for pedigree purposes is a red alloy spot located on the reverse below the E in UNITED. A splendid AU type coin.

1854-D $5 Medium D AU58 NGC.
Variety 31-W. The Medium D is significantly scarcer than its Large D counterpart. An unblemished example with significant luster and boldly struck borders. Liberty's hair and the eagle's neck and fletchings are softly brought up, as usual for the Medium D variety.

| Lot: 5424 | Jan 11, 2009
Sold For:
$4,312.50
1854-D $5 Medium D AU55 PCGS.
The reflective luster of this piece is scarcely dimmed by light highpoint wear. As usual for this issue, some striking weakness appears on the eagle, especially on its neck. Only a few marks appear in the fields. Incorrectly designated as a Large D by PCGS. Population: 20 in 55, 45 finer (7/06).
From The Wyoming Collection.
