The denticles and stars are each needle-sharp, and LIBERTY appears to be fully struck. The lovely chocolate-brown surfaces are accented with turquoise-blue in the recesses, beautifully preserved, and seemingly free from even the faintest contact. Only 10 pieces have been certified Proof 66 Brown by both services, none are finer (10/05). (PCGS# 2000)

1857 1C Small Date PR65 Brown PCGS. N-5, High R.5. A die lump below the right foot of the T in CENT and a thin die line on Liberty's cheek (both as made) confirm this proof-only Newcomb variety. Luminous aqua-marine, rose, and olive hues embrace the needle-sharp surfaces. Essentially immaculate aside from a trio of tiny carbon flecks on the obverse, one of which is centered between stars 8 and 9 and provides a pedigree marker. (PCGS# 2000)

1857 1C Large Cent, Small Date PR66 Brown PCGS. N-3, Low R.5. A bold die line (as made) on Liberty's bust truncation confirms the proof-only variety. The dentils and stars are needle-sharp and LIBERTY is fully struck. The glossy chocolate-brown surfaces are beautifully preserved and devoid of contact. For pedigree purposes we note a trio of minute carbon flecks near the edge of the neck. The 1857 is more available in proof format than earlier large cent dates, but most survivors are clustered in PR63 to PR65 grades. Our EAC grade PR60. Population: 4 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (4/22). NGC Census: (6/0). CDN: $7,500 Whsle. Bid for NGC/PCGS PR66. Mintage 238.

1857 1C PR64 Brown NGC. Small Date. N-3, R.5. One of the least rare proof Large Cents, Breen speculates that the odd entry of February 7,1857 of $2.38 may mean 238 proof Large Cents. NGC has certified 71 pieces in this grade with 23 finer (3/02). This piece has warm, rosy red undertones with glossy brown patina that covers most of each side. Deeply mirrored, of course, each side shows moderately high knife rims which are often seen on this issue. A problem-free example of this final year of issue for Large Cents. (PCGS# 2000)

PCGS 1857 PR 64 Brown. N-3. Important as the final year of the Large cent type. There is some uncertainty if the N-3 proofs are originals or whether they were struck in 1858-59 from leftover blanks from the restriking period during James Snowden's tenure as mint director. Characteristic of many of the proofs of this year and variety, this piece exudes a warm, rosy color beneath the coin's glossy brown patina. There is also a significant underlying iridescence that is most appealing. The deeply reflective proof fields are somewhat subdued from the depth of color, but leave no doubt about the status of this coin. When closely examined one notices many tiny lint marks in the fields. Apparently a cloth was used to wipe the dies and static electricity caused lint to cling to the dies and strike their impressions onto the finished coin. Breen estimates that perhaps 80 or so proofs survive of this variety. This is certainly a fine specimen that should bring strong bids from both copper collectors as well as proof type collectors. Population: 6 in 64, only 2 finer (12/94). (PCGS# 2000)
