1860 1C PR68 NGC. This is the first year of the Indian Cent design that was paired with a new reverse that featured an oak wreath with a sprig of olive and three arrows knotted at the base with a ribbon, and a federal shield at the top. This design would continue through the end of the series in 1909 with only minor modifications along the way. The 1860 is the second most difficult issue in the series, and it is very difficult to locate in Gem condition. Indian Cent specialist Ron Sirna believes that the majority of the 542 proofs were struck only once. He makes a compelling argument, and this would explain the lack of highpoint definition and only moderate reflectivity seen in the fields on most 1860 proofs. In fact, some proofs of this date are so unconvincing that they have been confused with prooflike business strikes in the past.

This coin shows just a bit of that characteristic softness on the tips of the feathers of the headdress, but the fields have a confirmed reflectivity that would make this piece impossible to confuse with a prooflike business strike. The surfaces display bright honey-golden coloration that is very close to the original "white" color copper-nickel Cents had when new. There is just the slightest accent of pinkish-rose color on each side and a smudge of light blue patina crosses the O and N in ONE on the reverse. Other than that one smear of light blue color, we have been unable to locate any contact marks. There are, however, numerous tiny planchet imperfections (visible only with a glass) that did not strike out of the coin because it allegedly did not receive a second blow from the hammer die. After three scans with a 16x magnifier we have been unable to locate any specks or flecks of carbon on either side of this immaculate coin. This is the finest coin certified by either of the major services, and in fact, only one piece is PR67 (also an NGC coin). Sure to be of interest to collectors who are assembling Registry Sets of copper-nickel Indian Cent (PCGS# 2253)

1860 1C PR66 PCGS. Rounded Bust. While the total mintage for proof 1860 cents was 542 coins, it is believed that not quite half (250) of that number were of the Type Two or Rounded Bust variety. It is also possible that since these pieces were produced later in the year than the Pointed Bust proofs, more may have been melted as unsold at year's end, further limiting the number of coins available to future generations of collectors. This is a beautiful example that has uniform honey-golden surfaces. The only defects we see on this high-end coin are weakness on the topmost feather of the headdress (possibly from a clogged die rather than actual striking weakness) and a tiny carbon spot just below Liberty's lower lip. Population: 24 in 65, 4 finer (2/04). (PCGS# 2253)

1860 1C PR66 PCGS. First year of the modified (and final) design, only 542 proofs were struck of the 1860 and it is the second scarcest of the copper-nickel proofs. This is a deeply reflective example that has lovely, light surfaces that show just the slightest overlay of oil-slick iridescence over each side. The only surface flaw that we believe is worthy of note is a small carbon spot to the right of the shield on the upper reverse. Superior overall quality. Population: 4 in 66, 0 finer (10/03).

1860 1C PR66 PCGS. First year of the copper-nickel Indian Cent design, and a very scarce issue in Gem and better grades. Unfathomably deep mirrors characterize the fields on this important high grade proof. Some contrasting mint frost can also be seen on the devices, giving the coin a mildly cameoed contrast. A significant overlay of rose patina covers each side of this bright honey-golden proof striking. One of only three pieces certified as such by PCGS with none finer (3/02).

1860 1C PR 66 PCGS. Rounded Bust Variety. The first year of Longacre's oak wreath and shield reverse, the proof 1860 was produced to the extent of at least 1,000 coins. This mintage was evenly distributed between two obverse hub varieties: the pointed bust variety of 1859-1860 and the rounded bust variety of 1860-1864. The latter variety was employed in the second half of 1860, with the result that more examples were melted at the end of the year than their Type One counterparts. Breen (1977) and Snow (1992) list this issue's net mintage as 542 coins. Snow also asserts that only about 50 examples of the rounded bust variety are extant.

This coin's Gem grade guarantees its Condition Census status for the issue. A lightly colored, tan-pink example, both sides are crisply defined with modest reflectivity in the fields. There are no readily evident distractions. This is the single finest coin known to PCGS, although NGC has certified an additional seven examples at the PR 66 grade level (10/00).

Second scarcest issue in the copper-nickel series, this example shows the numerous tiny planchet imperfections, moderate reflectivity in the fields, and not-quite-complete definition on the devices that characterize proof examples of this date. Each side is nearly perfect in terms of post-striking impairments, and the obverse is mostly honey-golden while the reverse has a rich overlay of reddish patina. Very scarce as such, this is the only coin to be so graded by either of the major services with only one other piece finer (4/03). (PCGS# 2253)

Unfortunately, the Mint's new proofing charge caused many examples to go unsold that year. The virtually pristine surfaces of this incredible Premium Gem show no visible imperfections and the design elements exhibit sharp details in most areas, with just a touch of softness on the diamonds.
