1818 25C MS66 NGC. B-2, R.1. Die State II. This variety is easily spotted by the wide date, stars close to the border, and the lower left star that almost touches the second fold in the drapery. Three points of star 13 are repunched. A prominent center dot resides well below Liberty's ear.

The Capped Bust coinage of John Reich was initially developed in 1807, beginning with the half dollar. According to the late Walter Breen, writing in his Encyclopedia: "Reich's new conception for the silver coins was an uncommonly buxom effigy of Ms. Liberty, wearing a mobcap inscribed with her name. (This was for generations misnamed a turban by people who never saw a real one; and even from the beginning it was taken to represent the pilleus or Phrygian liberty cap, whereas Reich actually intended it as a fashionable headdress, somewhat like that on some portraits of Martha Washington. Contemporaneous newspaper scurrility attacked the device as portraying 'the artist's fat mistress.') Reich placed it first on half dollars and half eagles, fall 1807; then quarter eagles (1808), dismes (1809), and finally quarter dollars, the next time banks ordered them (1815)."

This example has bright centers, with speckled gold, turquoise, copper-brown, olive-drab and azure coloration at the rims. A bold die crack joins stars 7 through 10. Surface impairments are minuscule, consisting of a few shallow marks on Liberty's lower throat and upper chest areas. The mint luster is satiny but full, and the coin's striking details are simply excellent.

Premium Gem survivors of coinage from this era are obviously very scarce, regardless of date or denomination. The 1818 quarter dollar is no exception, and the two major grading services combined have seen just 14 such coins, as of June, 2006, with two MS67s topping out the certified population data. Such high grade examples are only offered occasionally at public auction, and specialists would be well advised to take note of this u (PCGS# 5322)

1818 25C MS66 PCGS. B-4, R.2. This is one of the more easily obtainable varieties of this Capped Bust Quarter delivery, but the awesome technical quality of this coin certainly sets it apart from most, if not all other representatives of this die marriage. This is a simply gorgeous Gem with richly toned, lavender-charcoal surfaces that display a ring of electric-blue peripheral iridescence at certain angles. Both sides are frosty in texture with well centered, sharply defined features and only the lightest striking softness over the highpoints of Liberty's haircurls and the eagle's talons. With no mentionable abrasions, this coin is every bit the Premium Gem. Housed in a green label holder. Population (For All 1818 Varieties, at PCGS): 3 in 66, 1 finer (10/05).

1818 25C MS66 NGC. B-2, R.1. Star 13 repunched; Scroll ends: below center of upright of D, center of right base of A. One of the more obtainable die pairings in the Bust Quarter series both in total numbers and in better Mint State grades. This wholly original example is nonetheless among the finest B-2s we have ever encountered. The striking details are boldly impressed in virtually all areas and both sides are toned in beautiful violet and mint-green hues. Only a paper-thin mark to the left of the centering dot on Liberty's neck is of noticeable distraction. A lengthy obverse die crack from star 7, over Liberty's cap, and into star 10 is seen here, as on many high grade survivors. Population: 5 in 66, 1 finer (6/05). (PCGS# 5322)

1818 25C MS 66 PCGS. B-4, R.2. This coin is undoubtedly one of the most impressive Capped Bust, Large Size quarters extant of any date or die variety. We have offered numerous examples of B-4 over the past few years, none of which graded above the MS 64 level. The strike is razor sharp everywhere except over the eagle's right (facing) talon. Rich crimson-charcoal toning is noted on both sides, as are apricot and blue-gray undertones. The die crack (as produced) is diagnostic of this variety, and the surfaces are expectantly clean for the assigned grade. (PCGS# 5322)

PCGS 1818 MS 65. A rare gem survivor of the Large Size Bust quarter type. Very few mint state pieces have survived of this type, this lovely example is mostly brilliant but does show a pronounced russet patina around the rims.
Formerly sold as lot 54 of the Arnell Collection (Stack's, 1/67), where it was described as, "Brilliant Uncirculated gem. A superb strike with full mint lustre, "cartwheel effect." Lacking in the Gardner sale. The Pierce specimen was only About Uncirculated. This prize is surely worth double the Guidebook valuation of $275." It almost was, realizing an even $500 in that sale from 27 years ago. Worth more than ten times that amount today. From the Faraday collection. (PCGS# 5322)
