1928-D 25C MS67 Full Head PCGS. In the February 1986 edition of The Coin Dealer Newsletter (CDN, commonly referred to as the "Greysheet"), Jay Cline estimates that only 30-50 examples of this D-mint Quarter are extant at the Gem Full Head level. Current NGC and PCGS population data seems to confirm this estimate. Perhaps needless to say, the number of '28-D Quarters certified by these two grading services in MS67 Full Head is far fewer (a mere three coins, to be exact, with none finer, 10/02). At the upper reaches of Condition Census for the issue, this fully lustrous, richly frosted example is free of even the most trivial disturbance to the smooth surfaces. Every feature in Liberty's head is complete and, just as important, the balance of the obverse and reverse highpoints are equally well impressed. This is a bright coin with features that are untoned save for the lightest overlay of golden iridescence. Although not widely recognized as such, the 1928-D (1.6 million pieces produced) is a more challenging strike and condition rarity than the 1928-S. We last offered a similarly graded '28-D as lot 6403 in our February 2000 Long Beach Signature Sale. That coin, part of the "The Finest Known Set of Standing Liberty Quarters," traded hands for $15,525.

1928-D 25C MS67 Full Head PCGS. This is the second Signature Sale in a row in which we have offered a 1928-D Standing Liberty Quarter certified MS67 Full Head by PCGS. We assure bidders that this is a rare occurrence, and one should not assume that the '28-D is common in such a lofty grade. In fact, PCGS had only seen two examples at this level as of their October, 2002 Population Report. NGC reports another coin in this grade, and neither service has seen one finer (10/02). A simply extraordinary representative, the present example is fully struck with exceptionally impressive definition over Liberty's head. Interestingly, there is also a spindly die crack (as struck) through the same feature, but both the obverse and the reverse are devoid of bothersome abrasions. Mottled pastel tinged iridescence drifts over lustrous, shimmering surfaces. This lot represents an important bidding opportunity for the advanced Standing Liberty Quarter collector, regardless of whether or not he/she is assembling a PCGS Registry Set.

1928-D 25C MS 67 Full Head PCGS. With an original mintage of 1,627,600 pieces, this Denver Mint issue trails the desirable 1919-S (1,836,000 quarters produced) by more than 208,000 coins. While the '19-S is one of the prized keys in the series, the 1928-D quarter is surprisingly common in poorly struck Mint State grades. The same cannot be said, however, of carefully preserved, smartly impressed representatives such as the current specimen. Light mottled iridescence imparts a pleasing golden appearance to both sides. The smooth underlying features exhibit diamond sharp definition, but the innermost shield rivets are characteristically incomplete. We note that the reverse is rotated several degrees counterclockwise in relation to the obverse. Since NGC and PCGS combined report only 2 examples in MS 67 Full Head with none finer (9/99), the conditionally challenging status of this delivery should be obvious even among novice numismatists.

1928-D 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS. The 1928-D has proven to be quite challenging in Full Head, particularly in Gem and better condition. This satiny, iridescent example displays bold detail throughout Liberty's head and the shield, with sharp definition also on the eagle's wing and Liberty's toes. 1928-D 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. The low mintage 1928-D makes a regular appearance on the bourse floor, but only a minute percentage of the issue merits the Full Head designation. Even the fussiest specialist will be pleasing with the strike on the present Gem, however, as only the lowest right obverse star is not boldly defined. Golden-brown and sea-green colors grace this satiny and splendidly preserved Gem. The dies are slightly rotated counter-clockwise. Population: 9 in 66, 2 finer (10/03). (PCGS# 5769)

1928-D 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. Ex: Walser. Although we have offered some truly spectacular 1928-D Quarters in recent sales, this date is actually the scarcest of the three 1928-dated issues in the Standing Liberty Quarter series (per Cline, 1986). The present Gem combines a lavender tinged obverse with a bright, mostly untoned reverse. Some speckles of olive-tan color are also noted on the former side, but neither reveals a single blemish of note. A fully struck representative with billowy mint luster. (PCGS# 5769)
