1866 $1 Motto MS65 NGC. Even though 48,900 pieces were struck of the 1866 dollar, it is seldom located in mint condition. This is especially curious since numerous examples were set aside as mementoes of the first year of the modified design. Probably no more than 50-60 pieces are known today in all grades of Mint State. This coin is one of the finest known with only eight pieces finer, that number being arrived at by combining the MS66 and MS67 populations from both NGC and PCGS. This is an exceptionally attractive and pleasing coin that has the flashy, semi-prooflike finish in the fields that is so common to Seated dollars. Deep mauve, sea-green, and rose toning covers each side in multiple layers, but this depth of toning does nothing to impede the flash from the fields. Only slightly soft over the highpoints on the obverse with strong definition over the entire reverse. (PCGS# 6959)

1866 $1 Motto MS65 NGC. This coin is bathed in deep gunmetal blue and russet toning throughout, with the deeper hues in the fields closest to the devices, and lighter russet tones in the open areas of the fields. The strike is better than average, although some of the obverse stars don't quite show their full central radial lines and a couple of the tiny hair curls on Liberty are not fully rounded as seen on proofs of this era. First year of issue with the added motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Seated silver dollars are quite elusive in full Gem mint state, with this 1866 being no exception. In fact, the combined NGC and PCGS population reports note four coins graded this high with another nine examples seen finer. This particular coin is identifiable by a tiny tick on Liberty's right arm just opposite of her elbow, and on the reverse by a minor tick near the lowest arrowhead. A beautiful and classical silver dollar that would make a welcome addition to even the most advanced collection. (PCGS# 6959)

1866 $1 MS64 NGC. As the first year of the "with Motto" type, the 1866 has long been prized by type collectors and Seated Dollar specialists alike. The Mint produced only 48,900 business strikes this year, none of which circulated at the time of issue. The trend begun during the Civil War continued, with most coins leaving the country bound for destruction abroad. Those coins that survived did so either by chance, or were fortunate enough to remain within the United States until such time that they were able to circulate at face value.

This is one of the finest 1866 Seated Dollars that we have offered, and the first MS64 representative consigned to one of our auctions in four years. The luster is predominantly frosty in texture; the fields, while moderately bright, are free of noticeable striations. Every feature is fully defined, and the virtually untoned surfaces do not reveal any noteworthy blemishes. Population: 9 in 64, with a mere four finer (1/02). (PCGS# 6959)

1866 $1 Motto MS64 PCGS. The date is lightly recut. The obverse has dusky apricot and steel-blue patina, while the reverse is only faintly toned. The upper stars are not completely struck, but the major devices are very sharp. IN GOD WE TRUST is die doubled, as is common for the type. The right obverse field has a few wispy slide marks, but the remainder of the surfaces are lovingly preserved. The first With Motto issue, the 1866 is scarce in all grades since less than 50,000 pieces were struck. Only 40 pieces have been certified by PCGS as Mint State. Population: 10 in 64, 5 finer (4/03). 1866 MS 64 PCGS. Significant as the first year of the With Motto reverse, the 1866 is also a date which is not available with any regularity in AU or mint state. Only 30,700 business strikes were produced, and most of those were exported, leaving very few for collectors. Of the few pieces known, this coin is typical with light die striations in the fields which impart a bright, semi-reflective glow on each side. Sharply struck in all areas, the only surface flaw we see that keeps this lovely coin from a full gem grade is a shallow scratch in the right obverse field out from stars 11-13. Population: 6 in 64, only 4 finer (2/98). (PCGS# 6959)

PCGS 1866 MS 64. First year of the With Motto type, the 1866, like the Civil War issues that precede it, is very elusive as a business strike, proofs are much more available. This is an exceptionally lovely piece that has bright satiny surfaces. It is mostly untoned but at the bottom of the obverse there is a light splash of golden patina. Fully struck throughout and very close to gem status, only being held back by a couple of small abrasions on the figure of Liberty. Very rare in high grades. Population from both major services: 6 in 64 with another 6 finer. (PCGS# 6959)
