1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-PBv-15-L, R.7, Uncertified.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy, lightly a high zinc component. Silvered. 26.6 mm. A very rare variety. The example pictured in Adams-Chao is from the Massachusetts Historical Society. This piece displays strong detail with a touch of high-point wear. Mostly silver-gray, though areas of ebony patina appear as splotches in the obverse fields, and underlying brass-brown is visible in the border legends and over the high points of the ship.s

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-42-PP, R.6, Uncertified.
Copper alloy. 38 mm. Bright brass-gold color encompasses much of each side, with small areas of deeper olive-brown toning, especially in the obverse margins. Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 36 mm. The reverse is the same as on the previous variety. The obverse is new, but the portrait is identical. This piece is somewhat worn and displays light corrosion overall with ebony-brown patina. It is a collectible example of this rare variety.

1741 Admiral Vernon Medal, Cartagena, Adams-CAv-7-H, R.7 -- Tooled -- NGC Details. Fine.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 39.7 mm. The sole use of this reverse die was short-lived, accounting for the variety's rarity. Heavy wear throughout both sides results in NGC's Fine sharpness designation, while numerous pin scratches and possible graffiti show obverse tooling. Glossy deep-chocolate color is free of any corrosive action. This seldom-seen variety is always one of the notable challenges within the Cartagena designs in particular, as well as in the wider Admiral Vernon medal series. Although the NGC holder dates this piece 1739, the correct date is 1741.

1741 Admiral Vernon Medal, Cartagena, Adams-CAvl-3-F, R.6, Fine 12 NGC.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 33.9 mm. Although the NGC holder dates this piece 1739, the correct date is 1741 as shown on the medal. The obverse comes from the Porto Bello series (PBvl 4) with die wear contributing to the considerable day-to-day wear. Most motifs lack inner detail but are fully outlined. Surprisingly smooth surfaces show no environmental damage and pleasing light-brown color blankets both sides.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Convention of Pardo, Adams-UNI-22, Fine 12 NGC.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 30.7 mm. Adams-Chao segregate the uniface pieces from the core Vernon medals series. Also among the segregated uniface varieties the authors list three non-uniface pieces that are not strictly Vernon medals but which are traditionally collected with the Vernon medals. This is one of those pieces. It is a satirical piece for the Convention of Pardo, which was intended to help Britain and Spain avoid the war. This piece is somewhat worn, but it has smooth, problem-free brown surfaces. The figure depicted on each side is a Spaniard.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Vernon-Duke of Argyle, Adams-NLv-4-D, R.6 -- Tooled -- NGC Details. VF.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 40.3 mm. Vernon three-quarter-length portrait facing right-forward on the obverse with hand on cannon and ship in the right margin; Argyll full-length portrait facing right-forward on the reverse with war implements, St. George flag, and crown on a pedestal. Rare, with likely less than 30 pieces known. This example displays uniform deep walnut-brown patina with olive highlights over the obverse high points. The obverse fields are extensively but carefully tooled, with an overall glossy appearance. The reverse is granular but unaltered.

Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 30.5 mm. Vernon full-length portrait facing right-forward on the obverse with sword and baton in-hand. Satirical depiction of Satan leading Walpole to hell on the reverse. The obverse is shared by Porto Bello variety PBvi-9-J. Rare in all grades. This piece displays moderate wear but retains smooth chocolate-brown surfaces that are smooth and devoid of problems.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-PBv-17-O, R.7 -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. VF.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 38 mm. This variety is rarer than 17-N, which shares the obverse die. Some exist in base silver, but most are in the familiar copper-based alloy. NGC notes environmental damage, which is significant, and the deep walnut-brown surfaces are uniform in their patina. Very well detailed for the VF level.

Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 38.6 mm. This variety shares the 17-N reverse and is extremely rare in any condition. The present example displays smooth chocolate-brown surfaces, though numerous old gouges on the obverse prohibit a numeric grade. Moderate wear determines the VF level.

Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 38.4 mm. This variety uses the same reverse as PBv-17-N, but was struck later with the die details fatigued. This piece has strong VF detail and uniform chocolate-brown patina. Pitting across the obverse prevents a numeric grade from NGC.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-PBvi-8-I, R.7
-- Damaged -- NGC Details. VF.
Ex: Sedwick Auction 24 (11/2018), lot 1639; Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 10.25 grams; 38 x 26 mm oval planchet. A few indents in the upper-right field and some minor irregularities along the upper-right obverse edge prompt the NGC Details grade. Original deep-gray toning lightens to brownish-tan at points of wear throughout this rather crude-yet-rare Admiral Vernon variety. McCormack-Goodhart suggest that this medal variety was perhaps fitted into the loop of a key. VF sharpness survives on both sides.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-PBvi-14-R, R.7 -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. VF.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. British misspelled as "Britis." A scarce variety, since the obverse die may have been quickly removed from service. Vernon's legs are short to fit the small 26.5 mm diameter. Considerable wear and scattered corrosion do not significantly impact the desirability of this rare example that offers pleasing VF sharpness.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-PBvi-17-Z, R.6 -- Obverse Graffiti-- NGC Details. VF.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 37.5 mm. Similar in scarcity to 17-Y, this 17-Z medal with VF sharpness lacks most of the edge dentils that frame higher-grade examples. Some engraved obverse graffiti prevents NGC from granting a numeric grade. A Y-shaped obverse planchet fissure near the baton and another from the edge to above the ship's mast are as struck.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-PBvi-20-II, R.7 -- Tooled -- NGC Details. VF.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 37 mm. Faint tooling is seen throughout the upper-right obverse field. The reverse resembles 20-HH but is subtly reworked. The brown copper surfaces show areas of pinprick corrosion and a single dark spot opposite Vernon's eyes and nose. Most likely, the reverse die was retired early for this scarce Admiral Vernon variety.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal, Porto Bello, Adams-PBvi-22-KK, R.7 -- Burnished -- NGC Details. VF.
Ex: Admiral Vernon Collection. Copper alloy. 37.0 mm. Previously silvered, this example was burnished and now lacks some of its high-point definition. Traces of the silvering remain in protected areas. A new obverse was introduced, easily identified by the long, thin baton in Vernon's left hand. On the reverse, oversized ships crowd the legends.
