1805 1/2 C Small 5, With Stems. C-2, B-2, High R.5. Die State 1--Corroded--NCS. Fine Details. AG3 EAC.
Small, centered 5; Highest leaf below left side of S. In the Draped Bust Half Cent series, there are five key varieties. They are 1802 C-1, 1804 C-2, 1805 C-2, 1806 C-3, and 1808/7 C-1. The Reiver Collection is missing only one, the last of these five. Today there are at most about three dozen examples known of 1805 C-2. If the pedigree indicating this coin came from Carl Wurtzbach is accurate, it is most likely the example listed in Breen's Condition Census as "Fine," but not seen by him. The Wurtzbach Collection was sold by Barney Bluestone in 1943, and the 1805 "Gilbert-4" was lot 1615A. Three-quarters of the obverse is medium brown with the remainder dark steel. The reverse is essentially the opposite with mostly dark steel, intermingled with lighter brown color. The surfaces are noticeably corroded.
Ex: Carl Wurtzbach; B. Max Mehl (1950); Julian Leidman (10/7/1981).

1805 1/2 C Small 5, With Stems. C-3, B-3, R.4. Die State 2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VG Details. VG7 EAC.
Small, centered 5; Highest leaf below center of S. The later die state of this variety with a prominent bulge in the right obverse field. The obverse is the same die that was earlier used for Cohen-2, the reverse was used later for Cohen-4. Distinguishing between this plentiful Small 5, Stems variety and the rarer C-2 can be done by several features on the reverse. Breen recorded nine differences, but the easiest is comparison of the location of the berry inside the right wreath next to F in HALF. On this variety, the berry is entirely above the top of that letter. On the rare C-2 die marriage, only half the berry is above the top of that letter.
Perhaps NCS is correct in their determination that this coin has been improperly cleaned. However, we feel that such a description is unnecessarily harsh. The surfaces have lovely olive-brown color with pale blue accents. This example is much nicer that typically seen, without any of the usual roughness or porosity. A number of small abrasions on both sides are consistent with the grade. High grade specimens are non-existent, with the finest known barely reaching Extremely Fine. Design weakness inside the left part of the wreath is typical of most known examples. Take a look at this important half cent, for we believe you will find it to be a most attractive representative of the die marriage.
Ex: Peter Cumberland Coins (4/25/1988); Lanny Reinhardt (4/27/1989).
Envelope Included.

1805 1/2 C Small 5, Stems Fine 12 PCGS.
B-3, C-3, R.4. An earlier die state with the bulge on the right side of the obverse clear, as always. The surfaces have even brown patina with numerous small abrasions scattered over each side. Evenly worn over the obverse with localized softness on the reverse over CE in CENT.

1805 1/2 C Small 5, Stems VG8 ANACS.
B-3, C-3, R.4. A deep brown piece, the legends are clear aside from the left side of HALF CENT. The obverse field is minutely granular, but the only mark of any consequence is a horizontal pinscratch below the HA in HALF. Sinking of the obverse die causes a mint-made bulge in the right obverse field.

variety, the surfaces exhibit generally even wear with excessive loss of detail largely confined to the left-central reverse. The main obverse design elements are suitably outlined with all digits in the date readily discernible. The surface texture is rough and slightly pitted, and both sides exhibit dark charcoal-brown overtones. A few pinscratches over the upper left reverse are also noted.

| Lot: 5038 | May 3, 2003
Sold For:
$460.00
1805 1/2 C Small 5, Stems Fine 12 Corroded.
B-2, C-2, R.6. An example of the rare Breen-2 variety, and among the finest known examples. Medium brown and attractive overall, it displays unfortunate light corrosion on the upper half of Liberty's portrait and in the right obverse field, and two tiny corrosion spots on the reverse in the center. The obverse has a series of several small digs or short scratches on Liberty's bust and neck, but these are not readily noticeable without close examination, and they should serve as useful pedigree identifiers in the future. There is also a small rim bump at 4 o'clock on the obverse, and a tiny dig in the right reverse field below the A in AMERICA. The denomination on the reverse has stronger definition than usual for this variety, and the die characteristics are easily distinguishable. The balance of the surfaces are glossy and smooth.
Interestingly, this piece was consigned by a long-time collector as a type example of the Draped Bust design! A more common variety would have served the purpose filled by this specimen, but to the delight of the consignor and our cataloging staff, it proved to be a very special coin. It is estimated that approximately 30 pieces are known from this die combination, the rarer of the two 1805 Small 5, Stems varieties. Most survivors, however, are in lower grades. While this example is not problem-free, it is attractive overall, and remains a well detailed example of this highly sought after variety. Certain to generate considerable interest among students and specialists of the early copper series.

Sold For:
$920.00
1805 Small 5, Stems, B-3, C-3, R.5. Sharpness of VG 7, net Good 5. Light porosity is noted on both sides. HALF CENT is weak on the reverse, and there are two small marks on the E of UNITED. Dark steel-brown in color, and decidedly scarce in any grade.
Ex: Marc Earle, 3/93.

Sold For:

1805 Small 5, Stems, B-2, C-2, R.6.
Sharpness of Good 6, net Good 6. An exceptional coin for the grade, the surfaces are smooth and choice for the grade, and this specimen is quickly identifiable by a small cut from Liberty's drapery to the rim below. HALF CENT is weak on the reverse. Excellent rims and fields otherwise and a foremost rarity in any decent grade. One of the most sought after half cent varieties in any grade, and seldom found without problems.
Ex: McCawley-Grellman Auctions, (1/97), lot 160.

| Lot: 5027 | Sep 16, 1997
Sold For:
$5,060.00
1805 Small 5, Stems VG 8.
B-3, C-3, R.5. Unusually nice for the grade, with lighter devices and darker fields, identifiable by a minor scratch in the field below the ribbon, and a pair of shallow marks above the ribbon. Apparently Die State I, before the rust spots appeared near the bulge on the obverse. All the devices are sharp except for the letters HA and CE of HALF CENT, which are weak. A very difficult variety to find in choice condition, even in this relatively low grade this coin isn't too far from the Condition Census. Important.

Sold For:
$603.75
1805 Small 5, Stems VG 8.
B-3, C-3, R.5. A choice example of this sought-after rarity, the surfaces are free of distracting marks, the strike is bold, and the legends and devices are full and complete. The ever-present bulge is clear in the right obverse field, and a careful review of the reverse diagnostics confirms this is the rare B-3 die combination. Identifiable by a small nick in the field below the ribbon, another in the drapery folds at the tip of the bust.
Ex: Robert L. Hughes.

1805 Small 5, Stems VF 20 Damaged, B-3, C-3, R.5, dark fields offset the lighter devices, damaged by a mark in the field before Liberty's mouth, another above her hair ribbon, as well as some scratches, the reverse has fewer marks, and the coin is bent--obviously, this is a rare coin that should be inspected by prospective bidders; 1806 Small 6, Stems VG 8 Porosity, B-1, C-2, R.4, medium-brown and evenly porous, there is a small raised spot over the E of AMERICA; and an 1807 XF 40 Cleaned, B-1, C-1, R.1, well struck for the issue, centered on the obverse, a bit off on the reverse toward 2 o'clock, the devices are clear, the surfaces above average, and the color is coming back.
