1859 $1 MS64 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint produced 256,500 Seated Dollars in 1859, a total that is appreciably higher than any preceding issue in this decade. One might think that the 1859 is among the more common Seated Dollars from the 1850s, but this is not the case. Once again, as happened in 1854, 1855, 1856, and 1857, the federal government exported the majority of 1859-P Silver Dollars to the Orient. Today, the '59 is scarce in circulated grades, and rare in Mint State. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 12 coins in MS64, with a lone MS65 PCGS specimen finer (1/02).

This is a noticeably prooflike near-Gem whose fields display striations (as struck) from extensive die polishing. The strike is free of criticism and the definition is sharp in virtually all areas. The minimally abraded features are silver-white in appearance save for mottled sprays of tan iridescence here and there. A shallow planchet void (also as produced) in the obverse field above Liberty's left (facing) shoulder should help establish the pedigree of this important coin. (PCGS# 6946)

1859 $1 MS64 PCGS. By studying mintage figures alone, it would seem that the 1859 (256,500 pieces produced) is one of the more plentiful issues in the No Motto Seated Dollar series of 1840-1865. What the mintage figures do not reveal is that most business strikes of this date were exported to the Orient. The exact fate of these coins is not known with certainty, but there is no doubt that they were lost to future generations of collectors. A rare MS64 PCGS example (only five survivors have been certified as such, with a lone MS65 PCGS coin finer, 1/03), both sides are sharply struck with bright, striated (as produced) fields. Untoned save for a few sprays of tan iridescence here and there, the surfaces reveal only one noteworthy abrasion: a reeding mark in the obverse field before star 1. There is also an identifying planchet void (as struck) in the field at Liberty's left (facing) shoulder. (PCGS# 6946)

1859 $1 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Sterling, Legend. Like most Silver Dollars of its day, the 1859 was an export issue. Bullion was coined into Silver Dollars for their convenience, not face value, and shipped to the Orient, where most pieces were melted. Bowers (1992) writes, "Very few Uncirculated specimens exist... In this grade the 1859 is far rarer than most people realize. Certification data may be influenced by the resubmission of the same coins." The present near-Gem is originally toned in golden-brown colors, with forest-green and ruby-red toning prominent along the obverse border. The strike is good, but not full on Liberty's hair and the upper left reverse shield corner. As expected for the MS64 level, mentionable contact is scarce, and is limited to a slender horizontal reeding mark above the right (facing) wing.

1859 $1 MS 64 NGC. Many of the 255,700 business strike silver dollars coined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1859 were exported and subsequently melted overseas, making the present near-Gem among the finest survivors of this underrated issue. Both sides are richly toned in dove-gray shades with iridescent olive and russet undertones. The strike is quite bold for the series and the surfaces do not reveal any abrasions that would seem to rule out an even higher grade. An important bidding opportunity for advanced Seated Liberty collectors.

1859 $1 MS63 PCGS. Despite a reasonable mintage of 256,500 pieces, the 1859 is scarce in all grades, and is much more difficult to locate in Mint State than its New Orleans counterpart. This satiny older holder example is attractively toned in honey color, and is well struck save for the softness on Liberty's hair and nearby star so often encountered on business strikes of the design. A few minor marks on the fields and Liberty's neck do not substantially alter the eye appeal. Population: 14 in 63, 6 finer (6/05).

1859 MS 64 NGC. Of all the Seated dollar issues, the 1859 with a mintage of over a quarter million pieces probably has the lowest survival rates in all grades, from good to uncirculated. Well toned in steel-gray and irregular multicolored hues, the obverse of this coin is moderately reflective and only scattered abrasions over both sides limit the grade. Except for a handful of proofs, the 1859 is unknown as a gem. Population: 6 in 64, none higher. (PCGS# 6946)

1859 $1 MS63 PCGS. The Bowers Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, A Complete Encyclopedia states of this date: "Very few Uncirculated specimens exist. Dealers' memories are not always precise on this, for the availability in quantity of Mint State 1859-O sometimes causes confusion, but mintmarkless coins are rarities. In 1992, dealer specialist Chris Napolitano told me that he had never had a Mint State 1859 in stock, in the course of handling several collections and many rarities."

This unquestioned Mint State example offers deep brownish-gold patina on the obverse, with much-lighter amber-gold and silver accents on the reverse. A few light ticks and abrasions on each side account for the grade. Certified in a green-label holder. Population: 13 in 63, 7 finer (8/06). (PCGS# 6946)
