1873-CC T$1 MS64 PCGS. The first Trade Dollar from the Carson City Mint, the '73-CC was produced to the extent of just 124,500 pieces. The first 2,580 coins were paid out to local depositors, nearly the entire subsequent mintage ending up in China, where they saw heavy use and were frequently chopmarked. Needless to say, circulated representatives are quiet scarce, and Mint State coins, particularly those in high grades, are rare. A total of about 230 pieces have been seen in all grades by PCGS and NGC combined (8/05). Of these, about 40 are in the lower grades of Mint State (MS60 to MS62). Seventeen examples have been graded MS63, and just seven MS64. A mere two pieces have been certified Full Gem. Of course, it must be realized that several of these coins are likely resubmissions.

The rarity of the 1873-CC in Mint State grades is also apparent from a review of auction sales over the past 20 or so years. Our records indicate that 25 Uncirculated specimens have made appearances through the major auction houses over the past 20 years or so. Prior to the current sale, only one example was graded MS64, with not one piece grading higher. Only seven examples were graded MS63.

David Bowers, in his 1993 Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, writes that no known hoards of significance in Mint State are known. He further notes that, in the 1970s, World-Coin Investments had an estimated five pieces.

The present Near-Gem we offer here displays silver-gray surfaces with subtle undertones of ice-blue color. A few wisps of light tan are scattered about, especially around the borders. The design elements, while generally adequately struck, reveal some minor weakness on Liberty's head, in the adjacent star centers, in the ribbing of the leaves in Liberty's outstretched hand, on the eagle's left claw, and at the very tops of the wings. The surfaces exhibit glowing luster, and just a few minute marks on Liberty's left arm and in the adjacent field, and (PCGS# 7032)

1873-CC T$1 MS64 PCGS. The year 1873 is among the most notable in the annals of U.S. numismatics. The Coinage Act of 1873 (a.k.a. The "Crime of '73") legislated out of existence the two cent piece, the three cent silver, and the half dime. It omitted the (Liberty Seated design) silver dollar from the list of authorized coins while introducing the silver Trade dollar, slightly increased the silver content of minor coinage (signified by the 1873-74 With Arrows silver coin subtypes), and effectively bound the United States to the gold standard. Like so many U.S. numismatic issues that began with a bang, the two cent, silver trime, and half dime ended with a whimper with the issuance of the Closed 3 proof-only two and three cents, while the half dime saw a moderate business-strike issue.

The average spot price of silver, after peaking near the end of the Civil War in 1864 at almost $3/ounce, began a long-term slide. In 1870 the average price (London fix) was $1.43/ounce; by 1880 it was $1.12. The 1890s and 1900s brought further price collapses (with a couple of temporary spikes) to well below $1.00/ounce, a price range that persisted until 1967. A chief source of the long-term slide in silver prices was the Comstock Lode. The rich veins of Nevada silver were discovered in 1859, but lode production peaked in 1876 through 1878, when silver ore worth roughly $36 million was extracted annually. Silver prices were further destabilized in the late 19th century by the widespread shift of many nations from a silver standard to a gold standard. Germany adopted gold as its standard in 1871-73 (releasing 8,000 tons of silver onto the world market) and the Latin Monetary Union (France, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland) did so in 1873-74. The Scandinavian Union (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) and The Netherlands followed suit in 1875-76. By the final decades of the 19th century, silver dominated only in the Far East, especially China.

1873-CC MS 63 PCGS. A scarce first year Trade dollar, its mintage of 124,500 pieces being the second lowest business strike production in the series after the 1878-CC. Additionally, it is one of the more conditionally rare Carson City Trade dollars, with only a few dozen mint state survivors available to collectors. This important, generally mark-free example is razor sharp in virtually all areas, coming up short of full only on the two stars and a few leaves to the left of Liberty's head. The obverse is draped in a streaky olive-gold patina while a blush of reddish-orange toning appears along the reverse border. Near the top of the list of 1873-CC Trade dollars. Population: 3 in 63, none finer (2/99). (PCGS# 7032)

Needless to say, circulated representatives are quiet scarce, and Mint State coins, particularly those in high grades, are rare. This is the first MS62 example that we have offered since our 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale, and it is a virtually brilliant coin. Suggestions of golden iridescence are seen here and there, the fields reveal modest hints of reflectivity at a few angles. Although expectantly abraded for the grade, the distractions are small, well scattered, and not individually distracting. Well struck over all features save for a few of the obverse highpoints. Population: 5 in 62, 10 finer (1/02). (PCGS# 7032)
