1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS68 PCGS. Ex: Swiss America/Dr. Merritt. An Act of Congress dated April 13, 1904 called for an exposition to honor Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's 1803-1806 exploration of the U.S. Northwest. Although the Philadelphia Mint produced 25,028 examples in 1904 and a further 35,041 coins in 1905, a number of examples from each year were subsequently melted as unsold. The net mintages of these two issues are 10,025 and 10,041 pieces, respectively. The Lewis and Clark Exposition, held in Portland, Oregon in 1905, is sometimes confused with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which took place the year before in St. Louis. What both events have in common is that their gold commemorative issues were sold on the fair grounds by Farran Zerbe. Zerbe offered the Lewis and Clark pieces for $2 each, a reduction from the $3 price for the 1903 Louisiana Purchase issues. Zerbe also took his formidable coin collection to the Portland exposition, where it was displayed in the Manufacturers Building. He was not the first to offer the Lewis and Clark pieces, however, since Portland dealer D.M. Averill somehow obtained a quantity and advertised them for sale in the April 1905 Numismatist, two months prior to the opening of the exposition.

This radiantly frosty Superb Gem offers splendid, dazzling luster and lovely olive-gold coloration. In addition to razor-sharp design details, the piece displays impeccably preserved surfaces that are virtually flawless, allowing for slight evidence of mint-made die polish in the fields, and a wispy lintmark (as struck) that extends from 7 o'clock on the reverse rim onto Clark's bust. The overall technical merit and beauty of this piece testify to its status as simply the finest-known example of the 1904 Lewis and Clark Commemorative gold dollar. 1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS67 NGC. So...which of the dashing (but unlabeled) portraits represents Lewis, and which is Clark? As Swiatek-Breen put it succinctly: "In this, our nation's only two-headed coin, the obverse is legally the date side, and this side portrays--after a fashion--Captain Meriwether Lewis, who had been Thomas Jefferson's secretary despite his appallingly poor spelling. The side with ONE DOLLAR supposedly portrays Captain William Clark." With that bit of confusion out of the way, this lovely Superb Gem is among the best-preserved survivors of this century-old commemorative. Both wheat-gold sides display strong luster, and the portraits have above-average detail. Only a few tiny marks appear in the fields, and none of these are individually distracting. The present Superb Gem displays blemish-free surfaces that are unbeatable for the issue. Some noticeable metal flow (as struck) shows within the legends on both sides. Swirling mint frost shines through the holder and warm orange-rose overtones are seen overall. 1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark explored the Pacific Northwest early in the 19th century, under the administration of Thomas Jefferson. Their travels took over two years, leaving St. Louis on May 14, 1804 and returning to that city on September 23, 1806. A century later, the Lewis and Clark Exposition was held in Portland, Oregon to honor these explorers, as well as their Indian guide, Sacagawea. This event was organized by the Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair Company, who petitioned Congress for a gold souvenir dollar. Dated 1904 and 1905, a total of 20,000 of these gold dollars were distributed, along with an additional 66 pieces reserved for the annual assay.

This example is a stunning representative with sharp design features and highly lustrous satin surfaces. Both sides have rich orange-gold color with nearly prooflike fields. It is approaching the finest available quality, with only 13 finer examples certified by PCGS (5/06). (PCGS# 7447)

1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. Farran Zerbe was the man when it came to commemorative gold coinage issues. He played a role in nearly every such coin, especially those issues forming the 1903 through 1905 commemorative program. Zerbe actually attended the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (the 1904 World's Fair) and the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition (a.k.a., The American Pacific Exposition). At both events, he provided coins for sale to the public. Highly lustrous surfaces and brilliant yellow-gold color provide plenty of eye appeal to this Premium Gem. Both sides have excellent design definition in addition to radiant surfaces. A hint of the lightest orange toning can be seen on each side. The low mintage Lewis and Clark issues are often found slightly mishandled and even an MS64 must be considered well above average. The 1904 Lewis and Clark gold commemorative is much rarer than most other gold commemorative dollars in Mint State, and is especially elusive in the higher Mint State echelons. PCGS has graded more than 1,700 of this issue, but the great majority of them fall into the MS62-MS65 range. The present Premium Gem example offers exemplary copper-gold surfaces that are free of mentionable distractions. 1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66★ NGC. The Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, held in Portland, Oregon in 1905 and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis were the first two occasions for the issuance of commemorative gold dollars. Interestingly, both of these gold commemoratives were sold on the fairgrounds of their respective expos by Farran Zerbe, a fellow with a lot of pull at the United States Mint who was also present at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition with a variety of gold tokens and coins. Not only this is a wonderfully preserved Lewis and Clark, but as can be deduced from the star designation, the eye appeal of this Premium Gem is nothing short of extraordinary. Radiant, almost mark-free surfaces are cloaked in beautiful orange patina. Census: 4 in 66 Star, 1 finer (12/06).

1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. Although the 1904 version of this commemorative gold dollar is not a rarity, it is truly elusive in Premium Gem quality, and a condition rarity any finer. Or course, specialists in the series understand the importance of the similar issue dated 1905. This is a remarkable example with frosty yellow-gold luster on both sides. The surfaces are virtually perfect and the strike is essentially full. It appears that this piece is a late die state with considerable die wear or erosion visible in the fields.
