1863 $1 PR68 Cameo NGC. Proofs of this Civil War era issue are distinguished from business strikes by a date that is low in the field. Writing in 1993, Bowers (Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia), reports two die marriages for the proof 1863 Seated Dollar. He did, however, state that more particulars are needed regarding diagnostics of the second variety. All examples of this issue that we have handled in recent sales display the same diagnostics:

1. Left base of the 1 in the date is centered between two denticles.

2. The middle and lower arrowheads on the reverse are joined by a defect that seems to have been caused by inadequate die polishing.

3. There are unfinished areas in the reverse field between each pair of leaves in the olive branch.

In addition, some examples of the proof 1863 Silver Dollar exhibit a slanting die line from the tip of the eagle's left (facing) wing, as does the present example.

There is only one 1863 Seated dollar graded PR68 at NGC and PCGS combined: this PR68 Cameo NGC example. There is also a single PR69 specimen at NGC, but it comes without the Cameo or Ultra Cameo designation.

A wonder to behold, both sides of the currently offered Superb Gem are toned in golden-blue iridescence around swirls of lilac, pink, and apricot shades that are either centered (on the obverse) or drawn in a more even fashion over the reverse. The colors liven considerably as the coin rotates into the light, but all angles reveal full striking definition and a smooth, essentially blemish-free sheen. This is a stellar proof representative of a Silver Dollar date that is very difficult to locate in the finer Mint State grades. Expect fierce competition for this colorful Superb Gem from advanced date collectors and Seated dollar connoisseurs alike. (PCGS# 87006)

1863 $1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Intricately detailed with dazzling, heavily frosted features and traces of golden-russet peripheral toning along with flashes of blue iridescence at the rims. Examination reveals only wispy imperfections and considerable contrast is readily apparent between the devices and the watery, deeply mirrored fields. Fewer 1863 proofs were produced than of any Seated Dollar after 1858, a mere 460 pieces. Population: 8 in 64 Cameo, 0 finer (4/03).

1863 $1 PR64 Cameo NGC. The obverse has the date slightly below center and slightly to the right, with the shield point just left of the serif of 1. The extreme left edge of the base of 1 is over the space between two denticles. There are no other unusual or remarkable features of this obverse die, one of two different dies used to coin Proof dollars. The reverse is similarly unremarkable in that there are few unusual attribution points. There is a small area of unpolished field above and below the branch stem, joining the various leaves. Another minute unpolished area joins the lower two arrowheads. Finally, pale three of gule 1 (the rightmost line of the leftmost vertical shield stripe) extends upwards through five horizontal shield lines.

Just 460 Proof dollars were coined in 1863. Dave Bowers suggested that most "were probably sold, although the Mint's pricing and ordering policies during this difficult Civil War year made it anything but easy to acquire sets and individual coins." This Choice Proof has exquisite contrast with extremely bright and lustrous devices set against deeply mirrored fields. These fields have minor hairlines that prevent a Gem quality grade; however, the overall aesthetic appeal is outstanding. This is a lovely Proof dollar that will surely please almost any collector. 1863 $1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. The ice-white devices offer imposing contrast with the flashy mirrored fields of this needle-sharp near-Gem. Light golden-brown and mauve patina graces the borders. Light die doubling is evident on LIBERTY and the shield. A scant 460 proofs were struck, and the business strike issue was limited to only 27,200 pieces during this turbulent Civil War year. Population: 10 in 64 Cameo, 1 finer (3/04).
