1859 H10C MS68 PCGS.
A scintillating, Superb Gem bathed in concentric hues of turquoise, rose-violet, and russet iridescence. Both the strike and surface quality appear to leave little room for improvement. The 1859 half dime was Assistant Engraver Anthony Paquet's first work to reach actual production. This remodeling of Gobrecht's original design is most often noted for the hollow centers in the stars, a design element not found on any other U.S. coin. Perhaps because the figure of Liberty itself was not well executed, or because he did not wish another engraver doing his work, Chief Engraver James Longacre remodeled the half dime again in 1860, after only 340,000 pieces of the Paquet design had been struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The uniqueness of this design earns it one-year type status, long an oversight with collectors assembling type sets. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer (3/06).

1859 MS 67 PCGS.
The 1859 half dime has been an overlooked type coin for decades. This situation is likely to continue until collectors realize that the hollow centered stars, slimmer arms, and larger head constitute a design different enough to be considered as a separate type. This is a superior type coin that has thick, frosted mint luster over both sides and is toned in warm golden-red, gunmetal-blue, and sea-green hues over both sides with lighter centers. Only 7 pieces have been so graded by PCGS, none higher grades (7/97).

NGC 1859 MS 67.
V-3, Repunched 159. A second superb example of this one-year type. This piece is from the V-3 dies and shows faint repunching on the 1, 5, and 9 digits in the date. Well struck throughout, the fields show innumerable faint die striations, but rather than the coin being prooflike, instead it displays a rich, vibrant mint luster and is mostly untoned over most of each side. There is, however, a speckling of deep golden and blue toning toward the rims. An important, high grade example of this scarce type coin.

V-2. An important date in the half dime series, now recognized as a one-year type coin with hollow centers to the stars. This is a well struck coin that displays shimmering mint luster beneath incredibly vibrant blue, violet, and red toning. While not nearly as common as the 1858 in mint state, the 1859 is, nevertheless, usually available for a price. It is rated as R.2 in mint condition, but of course, is significantly rarer in MS 67. Population: 6 in 67, only 1 finer.

An absolutely stunning Superb Gem with fully brilliant silver surfaces on each side. The fields are reflective with lustrous devices creating a nice cameo appearance. The obverse has sharp details while some weakness is visible at the upper left part of the wreath on the reverse. Both sides have diagonal striations in the same relative direction, a result of planchet production. The surfaces on each side are essentially flawless.
The 1859 half dimes were produced with a slight design modification that was created by Anthony Paquet, famous for his double eagle that is offered in this sale. The arms of Liberty are slender in relation to Gobrecht's version. Each star on the obverse has a hollow center, rather than the raised center of earlier issues. Many consider this to be a distinct one year type coin. Census: 1 in 67★ , 4 finer (7/06).

The well struck, impeccably preserved surfaces are awash with scintillating luster and splendid, vibrant electric-blue and mauve-gray coloration. Mild die clashing is evident, primarily on the reverse, but there no post-strike defects on either side of this beautiful Superb Gem. In terms of eye appeal, this must be one of the finest examples in existence. Population: 17 in 67, 5 finer (3/05).
