1878 T$1 PR66 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. The 1878 is the first proof-only issue in the Trade Dollar series, and it is also the last year in which the mint sold examples of this denomination as part of proof sets. In the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, Boston dealer Don Corrado Romano and New York dealer Max Mizel formed two hoards of proof 1878 Trade Dollars, both of which have since been dispersed. It is safe to assume the present specimen was not part of those accumulations, as most of Eliasberg's collection was assembled by Clapp much earlier. This coin is moderately patinated in dove-gray shades with irregular reddish-crimson and cobalt-blue accents at the denticles. Neither the needle sharp strike nor the carefully preserved surfaces are worthy of criticism. Census: 8 in 66, 4 finer (10/05).

1878 T$1 PR65 ANACS. First of the proof-only years from Philadelphia, only 900 pieces were struck in 1878. This piece is deeply reflective in the fields with moderate frost over the devices. Richly and originally toned, the rose tinted centers are surrounded by cobalt-blue peripheral color that is transparent because of the deeply mirrored fields, even though the margins are quite deep in hue.

1878 T$1 PR66 PCGS. Highly attractive for the antique gold toning over the entire coin and ringed in deeper blue, with Liberty well frosted by the dies and bathed in a lighter gold hue. Perfectly matched on the reverse, where the fields sport slightly darker gold and gray offsetting the lettering and devices. The toning is a trifle mottled, but when dealing with nature's random artistry, one must not expect absolute perfection even on a coin of this caliber.

As 1878 unfolded the silver interests of the West combined forces to cause Congress to act. Simply stated, the bowels of Nevada had been opened wide, and silver was flooding into the mine owners coffers. Great wealth was had by a few lucky persons, but what to do with all this silver. The price of silver on the open market fell. Such events were not to be tolerated, and soon Congress authorized the purchase of large quantities of silver for coinage. Naturally the mints had no more desire for the silver than anyone else, they were coining along quite happy up to that time with the normal influx of gold, silver, nickel and copper. Congress imposed the Sherman Silver Act in early 1878 which authorized the purchase of millions of ounces of silver for coinage into the new Morgan silver dollars. With all the pressure to stamp out millions of the new silver dollars, the Trade dollar was virtually shelved save for a dwindling number of proof issues starting in 1879 which petered out entirely in 1885. The present 1878 Trade dollars represents the sunset issue for the regular business strikes, and this Gem Proof will certainly always be an exemplary reminder of the events of 1878 which caused the Trade dollar to fade away. Population: 9 in 66, 1 finer (10/05).
