1866 $1 PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Three different die marriages are known for the proof 1866 Motto Seated Dollar. The present Superb Gem is an example of the variety that Bowers (1993) describes as No. 2, and its diagnostics are:

1. Low date slanting up to the right on the obverse.

2. Reverse hub doubling on some of the letters in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.

3. Reverse die scratch slanting up to the left from the top of the third leaf on the olive branch.

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was first added to U.S. coinage by the terms of the Act of April 22, 1864, which also authorized the bronze Cent and Two Cent piece. The subsequent Act of March 3, 1865 mandated that the Quarter, Half Dollar, Dollar, Half Eagle, Eagle, and Double Eagle also display the new motto. The premier proof delivery of the new Motto Seated Dollar type, the 1866 was produced to the extent of 725 pieces, all of which were distributed with the year's silver proof sets. While survivors are not particularly rare in an absolute sense, they are subjected to quite a bit of pressure from date collectors due to the scarcity of the business strike 1866. Of course, the present Superb Gem displays surfaces that are so smooth that its unquestionable rarity is not tied to any factor other than the general lack of care with which proof Seated Dollars were preserved.

The otherwise lavender-charcoal toning warms to cobalt-blue shades in most areas around the margins. These colors yield to overlapping swirls of champagne-lilac and electric-blue undertones as the coin turns into the light. Similar angles also draw forth glassy reflectivity in the fields, which contrasts appreciably with the full, frosty finished devices. The only PR67 specimen at NGC, this coin is neither matched nor surpassed at PCGS. Incredibly, almost implausibly, NGC reports a single PR68 example finer (7/02).

1866 $1 Motto PR65 NGC. Mottled steel-gray and golden-rose toning envelops the obverse while flashes of orange-gold color appear about the devices on the livelier reverse. A significant degree of contrast is visible beneath the layers of toning. The premier proof delivery of the new Motto Seated Dollar type, the 1866 was produced to the extent of 725 pieces, all of which were distributed with the year's silver proof sets. While survivors are not particularly rare in an absolute sense, they are subjected to quite a bit of pressure from date collectors due to the scarcity of the business strike 1866. Of course, Gem specimens represent a very small percentage, perhaps as little a five percent, of the original production. Census: 18 in 65, 5 finer (11/05). (PCGS# 7014)

1866 $1 PR64 PCGS. The description in the Benson Collection catalog of this premier With Motto Seated Liberty Dollar proof reads: "Magnificent blue and rose gold toning throughout, perfectly arranged so the devices are highlighted. This is a very important coin, it is the first year of the new type with the addition of the motto "In God We Trust" on the reverse, and all but two clandestine 1866 dollars have the motto above the eagle. Close examination of the surfaces finds little to fault, the surfaces show virtually no signs of contact, and hairlines (if any) are faint at best...."

This is a lovely coin that has deeply mirrored fields and good portions of mint frost on the devices, giving a partial cameo contrast.
